Devotees flock once again to this year’s Feast of the Black Nazarene (celebrated every January 9) despite a measles outbreak in Quiapo. (Read the 8List Guide to Measles here.)

The Black Nazarene is a life-sized, dark wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ carrying a cross. Popular tradition holds that it was charred by a fire aboard the Manila galleon transporting it from Mexico. It is believed to be miraculous by many Filipino Catholics.

Enshrined at the the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, the image is removed from the church and carried in a procession along the streets of Quiapo during the feast.
