8 New Year’s Resolutions to Start 2023 on the Right Foot

Dec 26, 2022   •   Edgardo Toledo

We’re just a few weeks away from 2023! Can you believe it?  Aside from spending time with your loved ones during the holiday season, many consider the New Year an opportunity to leave old and unproductive habits behind. If your New Year’s resolutions list is still empty, here are some suggestions to help fill it up.

Work on your savings

Yep, enough of unnecessary “Deserve ko ‘to!” and YOLO-type spending (hi, Gen Ys and Zs!). With the rising inflation rate and over-the-top ride-hailing app prices, it won’t hurt to be a responsible spender.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ 2021 Financial Inclusion Survey report says the percentage of Filipino adults with savings dropped to 37% from 53% in 2019 due to several factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and low or irregular income. So let 2023 be your year of wealth. You don’t need to save thousands right off the bat, though. Set aside any amount you can and grow your savings from there

.

Exercise regularly

The world has never been the same again after the pandemic hit. All the stress and panic emphasized the need to take care of one’s well-being. This 2023, you can do just that. Start with beginner-friendly workouts like jogging or walking — take it easy if you’re not used to exercising. List your fitness goals and from there, decide if you need a gym membership, a fitness coach, or just gym equipment for some DIY workouts. And don’t forget, doing household chores counts, too!

Make new meaningful connections

We’re not only talking about LinkedIn connections, okay? It’s time for you to step out of your bubble and widen your social circle this 2023. It can be intimidating, but everyone has started somewhere when they first meet the people they now keep as friends. Whether you meet people online, at work, or within your neighborhood, always remember to be yourself, take it easy, and stay safe.

Learn a new skill

Thanks to the internet, acquiring a new skill or hobby is only a tap away. Aside from beating boredom, learning new things improves your mental well-being and opens opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. See? Sounds like a win-win!

New year, new me

You’ve probably heard this phrase a million times, because why not? Each new day is an opportunity for self-improvement, and a growth mindset can make you happier and more confident. So, if you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, ditching unproductive habits, or a closet revamp, this is your sign!

Spend more time with your loved ones

We get it. You’re busy building your career but don’t let your ambitions cloud your vision for other things that also matter, like family. And no, you don’t need extravagant vacations or reservations at fancy restaurants to show how much you care. Spending quality time with them is enough.

Stop procrastinating

Isn’t it fun to  binge-watch that newly released TV show or lie on your warm, cozy bed instead of exercising? We hope you’re not nodding your head right now. Procrastination is Enemy #1 for anyone trying to progress in life. Thankfully, there are tons of apps to keep you focused such as Focus To-Do and RescueTime. Eliminating unnecessary distractions like social media and too many snack breaks also helps. On to a focused 2023!

Be kinder to yourself

This year hasn’t been easy for everyone. But don’t forget to congratulate yourself for all the hurdles you’ve overcome. As you welcome 2023, be more compassionate and gentle to yourself. Do things you’re passionate about and redirect your attention from people or situations that’ll only disturb your inner peace. You deserve all the good things in life.

You got this!
