Silent Sky by playwright Lauren Gunderson is based on the true story of the early 20th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. Leavitt and her team of female scientists analyzed and catalogued every observable star in the heavens leading to the discovery of other galaxies and the vastness of the universe. Leavitt’s story touches on women empowerment and the issue of gender-inequality.

For the first time ever, critically acclaimed Duncan MacMillan play Every Brilliant Thing is coming to the Philippines. Produced by The Sandbox Collective, Every Brilliant Thing explores the heavy themes of mental health, depression, and suicide but also shows the amazing capacity the human spirit has for finding happiness in the smallest of things. This one-woman show is directed by Jenny Jamora and stars actress Teresa Herrera.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece, the original long-running musical The Phantom of the Opera, embarks on a worldwide tour since opening in 1986 and makes a long-awaited return to Manila on February. The musical is based on the classic novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux, and is set in the heart of the Paris Opera House. Young, beautiful, and talented Christine Daae (Meghan Picerno) becomes the subject of the Phantom’s (Jonathan Roxmouth) affections and dangerous obsession at a cost. The romantic tragedy features famous songs such as “All I Ask of You,” and “The Music of the Night.”

A grand tribute to National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal, and National Artists Felipe de Leon and Guillermo Tolentino, Noli Me Tangere, the Opera returns to the stage after a limited run back in 2017. The Opera is based on Rizal’s political novel that widely remains relevant today, decades after it was written. The performance is also in time for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

MIONG, a musical based on the life of Emilio Aguinaldo, was written in 1998 to celebrate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence. It tells about his youth, his declaration of independence in Kawit, his declaration of the first Philippine Republic in Asia and his fight to defend Philippine independence in the Philippine-American War. MIONG celebrates courage and love of country and illustrates how the most ordinary young person can accomplish great things.

Tony and Olivier Award winner musical Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim announced last month that it was casting fellow Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress Lea Salonga as Mrs. Lovett. This is the musical’s 40th anniversary since it opened on Broadway in 1979. It tells the tale of Sweeney Todd (Jett Pangan), a disturbed barber who murders people and lets Mrs. Lovett bake the bodies into meat-pies sold in her shop.
