The thing about today’s youth is that almost everyone is a fighter — online. But while not everyone can pull off their online tough-guy persona and be consistent in real life, there are some that do.
If you’re anywhere on Twitter, you’ll most likely see Frankie Pangilinan’s name here and there coupled with hashtags such as the recent anti-sexual harassment tag #HijaAko. The daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Frankie — known as Kakie by many — might be 19 years old, but she embodies the very essence of what millennials call “woke” in the best way possible.
what kind of career would i be forging if i hid my own convictions and p much lied and came across as intentionally complicit? not for me ty

Frankie has grown from that cute kid in her mom’s Nido commercials to somebody with a strong following of teens and young professionals who believe in her. And how could they not? This girl has got a great head between those shoulders. In an age where openly opposing the government could end in a summon from the NBI or worse, jail time, it’s getting difficult to speak up, but not Frankie. She sees the injustice, calls out the wrongdoings, knows her responsibilities to her country, and she has helped encourage many.
keep yourselves and each other properly informed. gen z, spotting fake news is easier for us. we all have a responsibility to speak up and do what we can within our means. don’t lose hope we totally got this. love u.

– rape culture is real and a product of this precise line of thinking, where the behavior is normalized, particularly by men.
– the way anyone dresses should not be deemed as ‘opportunity’ to sexually assault them. ever.
– calling me hija will not belittle my point. https://t.co/bLbtEDVGBn— hija (@kakiep83) June 14, 2020
Ben Tulfo had it coming when he called Frankie a “wannabe smart alec” after she made her stand against sexual harassment. Frankie commented on the news that a Quezon Province policeman told girls to be mindful of their clothing to avoid being victims of assault. “Stop teaching girls how to dress?? Teach people not to rape,” Frankie wrote.
Afterward, Tulfo tagged her in his post and condescendingly calling her “hija” saying “Sexy ladies, careful with the way you dress up! You are inviting the beast.”
Instead of ignoring his problematic mindset, Frankie called him out and used his comment to start a movement. The hashtag #HijaAko trended; it encouraged women to speak up about their own unpleasant experiences with sexual harassment in the hopes of educating others that it’s never the victim’s fault. It’s men like Tulfo who “unknowingly” objectify women and make excuses for abusers, holding back the human race’s progress.

Frankie knows how important it is that we all stay informed, but she also knows that this constant barrage of information is overwhelming. She provides some help in the form of comforting tweets. Sometimes she even posts screenshots of her conversations with her father regarding national issues to help us sleep at night.
imagine making yourself dinner in your tiny apartment and tucking yourself into bed with a warm blanket only to get a notification informing you your parents are arguing daw. it’s not either of your parents, it’s not your sister, not the dog,
it’s rodi.

Back in December 2019, Frankie threw President Rodrigo Duterte some shade for his remarks on her parent’s marriage.
Duterte, during an event for Bonifacio Day, claimed that the Megastar and Senator Kiko’s marriage were on the rocks and that Sharon wanted to kick her husband from their home. This news was surprising to Frankie (who was at the time residing in New York, finishing up her undergraduate studies) for a number of reasons. One, for somebody who is obviously against Senator Kiko, the president seems to be far too invested in his marital life. Two, how the heck did the president even get this info even before the couple’s kids did?
Of course it was all another petty rumor (most events and press conferences these days have them) and Frankie silenced it all with a series of tweets and a photo of a happy couple.

Frankie is a musician and writer. Just like her mom, she has a gift for crafting songs, writing lyrics, and performing them with her warm and deep voice. She also has an Instagram account dedicated to her poetry and a Wattpad account for her stories. This just goes to show that when she’s not out there kicking butt and expressing her valid opinions on social media, you can probably find her hunkered down on her notebook translating her thoughts into poems, stories, and songs.

On Twitter everyone knows she fondly calls her parents Farmer Fred and Shawie. If the incident with the president doesn’t prove it enough, she loves them with a passion. She often jokes about her parents on social media and this just shows the healthy family dynamic the Pangilinans have. Shawie and Farmer Fred raised her to be the outspoken, confident, and creative woman she is today.

One can just imagine it: Frankie cracking a joke while pulling a poker face. A girl this smart and witty has survived all these years by thinking quickly on her feet but what’s all that without a dash of humor and sarcasm? Whether Frankie is roasting a basher, making a joke at the expense of her parents or herself, or even just tweeting whatever is on her mind, we adore her frame of mind.

A few weeks ago, Frankie became a guest speaker for an online lecture series on anti-terrorism and human rights. With the threat that is the vague Anti-Terror Bill looming, she made her stand and spoke up even though she admitted that she was nervous about it. Her conviction gave her the confidence to fight for her beliefs. A few days later, she shared her interview with VICE Asia where she talked about her views on fighting for freedom in 2020.
Frankie Pangilinan might only be a teenager but she’s one of the brightest ones out there. She knows her rights, she knows where she stands, and she will not be deterred in the face of evil (or online trolls). There are many more like her, young men and women who have taken to social media or even to the streets to help educate others and give a voice to the youth. At the end of the day, Frankie is just one of our favorite spirit animals but rest assured, there are countless kindred spirits like her.
Do you relate to Frankie’s beliefs, bravery, and humor?
Kyzia spends most of her time capturing the world around her through photos, paragraphs, and playlists. She is constantly on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, and a great paperback thriller to pair with it.
