8 Totally Achievable New Year’s Resolutions That’ll Make Your Life Better

Jan 1, 2020   •   Cristina Morales

It’s the start of another new year, which means that it’s time to be like Taytay and shake off the bad habits of the last year and replace them with better ones. But here’s the thing: while it’s easy to make New Year’s resolutions, actually sticking to them is another matter. Last year, only about 10% of Filipinos fulfilled their New Year’s resolutions.

So does that mean we should abandon New Year’s resolutions and all hope of changing for the better?

Of course not. What we should do is make our resolutions realistic and achievable. Here are some not-so-crazy, totally achievable resolutions that will make your life so much better.

Drink more water

We all know about the importance of drinking water. Drinking enough water is key to staying healthy and alert, and it doesn’t hurt that it keeps our skin looking fresh and dewy. Motivate yourself to drink more water by investing in a good water bottle and setting a timer.

Pick up a new hobby

When was the last time you tried something for the first time, just cause it seemed like fun? Pick up that paintbrush. Enroll in that trapeze class. Sign up for an easy hike. The world is your oyster.

Take the stairs

If going to the gym every day seems a tad ambitious, commit to taking the stairs. Not only will you be able to burn some carbs and tone those glutes, it’s also better for the environment!

Sanitize your phone weekly

Fact: Your phone is gross and covered in germs. Do your immune system a favor and set a weekly alarm to wipe it down with alcohol. It ain’t that hard.

Spend less time in front of a screen

There’s a real world out there, and it’s worth paying attention to. If you need some extra help, download an app (see link below).

Keep up with current events

Stop relying on your Facebook and Twitter feed for news and actually make an effort to find out what’s going on with the world. And to get a balanced view of what’s really going on, read news from multiple reputable sources.

Stop eating lunch at your desk

In spite of what hustle culture might lead you to think, you really do need work-life balance.

Also, eating lunch at your desk every day is just sad. Give yourself a break and go to the office pantry at the very least.

Be kind to yourself

Practicing self-compassion isn’t just good for your mental health, but also for your physical health (it’s said to slow your heart rate and sweating). Repeat affirmations in the morning. Don’t be afraid to spoil yourself every now and then. Treat yourself kindly and it won’t be long before you start seeing the world in a better light.

What are your resolutions for 2020?
