Dear Senators,
Congratulations! You’ve earned enough votes from the people to secure a seat in the hallowed halls of the Senate for the next six years. We’re sure you’re happy to be there, knowing full well the many challenges and sacrifices you went through just to get to where you are today.
That being said, seeing as we elected you and technically, we pay your salary, we the people have a few wishes for you guys. We hope you don’t mind. After all, we gave you our votes. It’s the least you could for us. Stuff like…
We get that you guys have a lot of things going on, but you begged us to put you in Senate. If you were going to just be absent a vast majority of the time from the sessions, then why did you even ask for the job to begin with?
We understand you might find making laws a tad difficult, but that’s literally your one job in the Senate. Anything else is just gravy. So please. Put your thinking caps on, and actually make laws that help us, not make life harder for us. And no, putting the one good law you ever did in front of a knife to split it in two doesn’t count as making another law.
You can be part of the admin or opposition for all we care, but in the end, you represent the people, and the people hope you don’t just follow the herd because it’s politically expedient to do so. One can hope, right?
The next six years are crucial because of the many changes our country is going through, and how our future depends on a Senate that knows what it’s doing. We hope you realize what’s at stake and not treat this as merely business as usual.
We understand a lot of critics just love to slag on you, but there are well-meaning critics who just want to see you do your jobs better, and more often than not, they’re the ones you blow off because you know they won’t fight back. This is counterproductive and helps nobody. Winning a critic over into a believer is a lot more satisfying than telling them off without hearing them out.
The things you supposedly stand for are the things that pretty much got you elected. It would be a travesty if you ended up changing in the Senate and turning your back on everything that made the people believe on you.
Please. Don’t.
Because this bears repeating. You. Yes, you.
Just don’t.
