8List Guide to Translating a Beki Menu

This menu board has been circulating in social media lately. A wonderful example of how fun (and funny) language can be.

Even the language of the menu can be called many things: gay slang, swardspeak, bekinese, etc.

For the uninitiated, here’s a guick translation/syntax guide.

8
Ny prefix
Replace the beginning consonants of a word with ny.

Menu translation:
Nyorkchop = porkchop
Nyicken = chicken

Other examples:
Nyoxi = taxi
Nyorlog = tulog

J prefix
Replace the beginning consonants of a word with j.

Menu translation:
Jotdog = hotdog
Jootlong = footlong

Other examples:
Jontis = buntis
Juba = taba

China suffix
Add china (pronounced as cheena and not like the country) to the end of a word.

Menu translation:
Liempochina = liempo
Meatchina = meat

Other examples:
Balaychina = balay (bahay)

Chi suffix
This is an abbreviation of the china suffix. Use when you’re in a rush, of course.

Menu translation:
Adobochi = adobo

Other examples:
Takbochi = takbo
Rampachi = rampa (rampage)

Bels suffix
Add bels to the end of a word.

Menu translation:
Tapachinabels = tapa (this word uses two suffixes: china and bels)

Other examples:
Gorabels = gora (go)
Keribels = keri (carry)
Mudrabels = murda (mother)

Ey suffix
Add ey to the end of a word or replace last syllable with ey.

Menu translation:
Imbutidey = imbutido

Other examples:
Imbey = imbyerna
Waley = wala

Deskeru suffix
Add deskeru to the end of a word. Not commonly used, deploy to highlight a word or if you just want to sound fabulous.

Menu translation:
Tocinocinadeskeru = tocino

Other examples:
Chakadeskeru = chaka (ugly)

Word substitution/elongation
Using another (usually longer word) that contains the sound of your intended word.

Menu translation:
Maharlika = mahal
Murayta = mura

Other examples:
Antokyo Japan = antok
Pagoda = pagod (Pagoda is used only if you are tired. If you are super exhausted, you have to say “Pagoda cold wave lotion”)
