We have to hand it to TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé, they truly know what makes for great reality TV entertainment. In 2020, it gave us the amusing pairing of the ill-mannered No Neck Ed and his Filipina partner Rose Vega who never hesitated to put him in his place. And now it’s giving us another Filipina to root for in Sheila, a 31-year-old single mother in a relationship with David, her 42-year-old boyfriend from Nebraska. Sheila and David’s 90 Day Fiancé story isn’t toxic like the others, but it does have its own drama. For instance, getting jealous over a female sign language interpreter.
This season of 90 Day Fiancé introduced us to David Dangerfield who was born completely deaf to a family of hearers. He went to a deaf boarding school where he learned sign language, giving him the ability and confidence to live on his own. David was in a 6-year relationship with a deaf woman who ended up cheating on him. And after she left, he realized he wants to build a family with an honest woman. Enter our Filipina friend, Sheila.
David met Sheila on a Facebook group for deaf singles and they’ve been together for two years now. She hails from Cebu and, unlike David, is only partially deaf. The 31-year-old damaged her hearing when she was a little girl, playing with inserting a broomstick in her hear. She ruptured her eardrums and had trouble hearing since then. Sheila doesn’t know sign language but instead relies on her hearing aid to help her communicate with those around her.
Sheila lives a simple life in Cebu, in a house that’s devastated by a typhoon and a fire. She’s a single parent to her 12-year-old son, managing to stay afloat financially by selling cotton candy in the streets. Meeting David online and dating him for two years is one of the best things that ever happened to her.

Because 90 Day Fiancé is all about helping couples strengthen their relationship (or make them realize they aren’t for each other), they flew David from Nebraska to Cebu to meet Sheila IRL. But since Sheila doesn’t know American Sign Language (ASL), the show had to hire an ASL interpreter to accompany them on their first meet-up. This is where we meet Aimee, a Filipina sign language interpreter with ASL skills that instantly made Sheila jealous. If Aimee looks familar, that’s because you’ve probably seen her during TV Patrol, signing for deaf viewers in the little box on the corner.
It was obvious Sheila was uncomfortable having a female ASL interpreter who could do something she couldn’t for her boyfriend: Understand him. While Aimee and David have a silent conversation, Sheila is growing jealous by the minute, even crying during an interview. Sheila feels jealous because Aimee is young and single and who knows if she’ll snatch her beau?
However, Aimee has no interest in anything but excelling in the job she was hired for. She’s there to chaperone this couple and help them speak to each other without having to type sentences on their phone. But Aimee couldn’t hold back in her opinions too. She said in an interview that Sheila should have learned ASL if she wanted to date a deaf person.
“If I love someone and [had] been dating for two years, I would definitely learn his language,” said Aimee, much to the displeasure of viewers (more on that later).
As for David, it’s great to see that he’s committed to Sheila and that he’s trying his best to fit in her life. Even though he’s shocked about her living situation, he didn’t make rude comments like No Neck Ed or make his woman feel bad.

When the clip of Sheila saying she was jealous went viral on TikTok, it was met with different reactions. Many sided with Sheila saying the interpreter throwing “shade” and “openly flirting” was “unprofessional.” They didn’t like how Aimee threw her two cents in a situation where “her personal opinion did not matter.”
“The interpreter shading Sheila like that was so rude and unprofessional. Sheila is a single mom living in poverty trying to care for her son,” read one comment.
“This whole situation is rough, Shelia should learn his language but the interpreter shading her like that, is already a [red flag],” commented another.
On the other hand, some folks berated Sheila for not learning ASL before meeting her deaf boyfriend.
I know you aren’t being jealous over his ex because they can communicate better! You should have practice ASL before his arrival ! You knew he was deaf before he came. Ugh #90DayFiance #90dayfiancebeforethe90days

Meanwhile, others were simply blown away with Aimee’s skills. “Watching her interpret in to ASL for him and from ASL to her native language but also in English was pretty impressive.”
“She was listening in one language and interpreting in two simultaneously!” said another impressed Tiktok user.
But it looks like David’s interpreter is the least of the couple’s problems. In the next few episodes about them, we learn that Sheila’s mother dies after falling down the stairs, hours after the couple met for the first time. David, who was in shock with the tragic situation, consoles her through it all. And now all that’s left is for us to find out if this whole visit and the 90 Day Fiancé program will bring them closer and, as Gen Zs would put it, make them endgame.
