Netflix Original BoJack Horseman is the type of show that will lead you on with a few comedic episodes that you’ll enjoy and then suddenly you’re plunging into an abyss. It discusses adult issues such as depression, sexuality, and alcohol and drug abuse along with putting a comedic light on social issues in the entertainment industry and society in general. This animated series is truly one of a kind!
The 5th Season is set to drop in Netflix on September 14 and while we’re all excited, let’s take a look back at some of the gut-punching, heart-wrenching scenes from the past 4 seasons.
Season 1 was one of the lighter seasons and we’re slowly being introduced to the main characters. Diane Nguyen is BoJack’s ghost writer for his overdue memoirs. BoJack gets upset when he finds out that she’s dating Mr. Peanutbutter, his friend and former sitcom rival. With all the time he spends with Diane, he realizes he likes her and therein lies the problem because she is already somebody else’s girlfriend.
Memorable lines:
“
Mr. Peanutbutter: Admit it! You like my girlfriend!BoJack: Oh come on! I mean, am I attracted to her? Sure. Does she get me in ways no woman ever has? Indubitably. Am I the kind of guy who would try to steal someone else’s girlfriend? Sure of course. But do I like her? The answer is no, you have nothing to worry about.
”
BoJack goes in search of Charlotte in New Mexico, a friend of his from decades ago whom he still has feelings for. He gets quite a shock to find out that she’s married and has her own kids. BoJack pretends he’s in town to buy a new boat and ends up staying in Charlotte’s driveway for two months. One night when he can’t contain his feelings, he confesses to Charlotte that he still likes her and she rejects him and tells him to move out. Saddened, BoJack heads back to his boat and finds Charlotte’s daughter, Penny, waiting for him. What happens next was truly heartbreaking and BoJack is sent packing to L.A. on his boat that he aptly named Escape from L.A.
Memorable lines:
“
BoJack: Please don’t make me go back to L.A.!Charlotte: I don’t care where you go, BoJack, but I can’t have you around here. You make me too sad.
”
What started as a comedic episode with Mr. Peanutbutter’s new game show Hollywoo Stars and Celebrities: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things? Let’s Find Out! ended in a grim revelation of feelings on live TV. BoJack comes to terms on the reason behind his annoyance at Mr. Peanutbutter and he realizes it’s not his friend’s fault.
Memorable lines:
“
Mr. Peanutbutter: You’re a millionaire movie star with a girlfriend who loves you, acting your dream movie. What more do you want? What else could the universe possibly owe you?BoJack: I want to feel good about myself the way you do. And I don’t know how. I don’t know if I can.
”
The show’s strengths lie in its creative, funny, and amazing dialogue but this episode proved that it can also stir emotions through actions. BoJack attends the underwater Pacific Ocean Film Festival for the “Secretariat” premiere and he tries to reach out to ex-Secretariat director Kelsey. Wanting to apologize to her, he tries to catch her and write her a note since he can’t speak with his underwater helmet on. After a series of events, he successfully writes her a note and catches up with her in a cab only to find out the note blurred. Also, he can speak if he presses a button in his collar.
Memorable line:
“
BoJack: Kelsey, in this terrifying world, all we have are the connections that we make. I’m sorry I got you fired, I’m sorry I never called you after.”
High on drugs and emotion, Sarah Lynn and BoJack go on a trip that’s peppered with black outs and flashbacks. Sarah Lynn encourages him to make amends with the people in his life so they end up driving everywhere, from Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter’s place, to Todd’s, to Princess Carolyn’s, and even to Penny’s place. They finally end up in a planetarium and we all know how this ends.
Memorable line:
“
BoJack: See, Sarah Lynn? We’re not doomed. In the great grand scheme of things, we’re just tiny specs that will one day be forgotten. So it doesn’t matter what we did in the past or how we’ll be remembered, the only thing that matters is right now. This moment, this one spectacular moment we are sharing together. Right, Sarah Lynn?”
Princess Carolyn has had an awful day starting when Courtney Portnoy fired her as her agent. On top of everything, she found out she lost her baby and reveled that it was her fifth miscarriage. BoJack was also having a bad day so instead of Princess Carolyn sharing her own problems, she tells BoJack a technique she does to make herself feel better. It squeezed our hearts that’s for sure.
Memorable line:
“
Princess Carolyn: You want to know what I do when I have a really bad, awful, terrible day? I imagine my great, great, great granddaughter in the future talking to her class about me. She’s poised and funny and tells people about me and how everything worked out in the end. And when I think about that, I think about how everything’s going to work out. Because how else could she tell people?”
After too much rejection and self-loathing from BoJack in this series there is finally somebody who wants him in their life. Hollyhock, a 17-year-old horse who he initially thought was his daughter with some fling, is setting out to meet her real mother. BoJack has spent a long time pushing Hollyhock away but now that she’s finally leaving, he can’t help but miss her. He worries about her trip and she tells him she’s fine, she doesn’t need him as a dad. We can almost feel BoJack’s desperation in this moment but then Hollyhock says she needs him as a brother and BoJack smiles.
Memorable lines:
“
HollyHock: BoJack look, I never needed you to be a dad. I’m going to be fine! I told you from the beginning I have 8 dads.
BoJack: Yeah. Yeah. Good.
HollyHock: But I’ve never had a brother.
”
Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter eventually get engaged and get married and throughout the seasons we see how they struggle with married life. They love each other but it seems as if they aren’t really compatible. Diane doesn’t like grand gestures or airing her life for everyone to pick apart but Mr. Peanutbutter keeps surprising her with extravagant things and what’s more, he has a reality show set in their house. With this particular episode, we watch what possibly looks like the beginning of the end of their relationship although we can’t say for sure until Season 5.
Memorable lines:
“
Diane: You know sometimes I feel like our marriage is a magic eye poster. It’s messy and at first glance it doesn’t seem to make any sense, and it’s hard to figure out. But sometimes, if you squint at it just right, everything lines up and it’s the most perfect, beautiful, amazing thing.Mr. Peanutbutter: Yeah I know what you mean.
Diane: But I’m so tired of squinting.
