It’s been ten years since Spotify launched, and we’ve loved using it ever since to listen to our favorite songs, create playlists for every mood, and discover new artists to fall in love with.
In celebration of Spotify’s decade of achievements, the global streaming service released the Decade of Discovery which lists the top streamed tracks and artists for every year. Here are the top 8 songs for the past 8 years!
Ever since Ed Sheeran dropped his album Divide at the very beginning of the year, his songs have played nonstop in restaurants, bars, and radio stations — the favorite being “Shape of You”, which is also the second most-viewed YouTube video by views (3.8 Billion views).
“One Dance” from Drake’s album Views was 2016’s certified Song of the Summer. It went on to being the number one song in 15 countries worldwide and even topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 consecutive weeks.
This electronic dance hit had been such a commercial and critical success that you’ll never fail to hear it (and dance to it) at the club.
The creators of Despicable Me 2 wouldn’t ever have predicted the success of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”. The song became such a hit that it had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and Video of the Year at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
“Can’t Hold Us” by American hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is infectious, headbang-worthy, and adrenaline-filling. It peaked as number one in the Billboard Hot 100 and was also nominated for Best Music Video at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014.
2012 definitely seemed like a year of heartbreak and hugot, after Gotye and Kimbra’s piece “Somebody That I Used To Know” became the most streamed song on Spotify for the year. It would go on to win two Grammy Awards in 2013, and become a mainstay in our hugot playlists.
We are no stranger to Spanish/Portugese songs becoming mainstream hits, and that includes Don Omar’s “Danza Kuduro”. The sunny, upbeat tempo it features makes it a fun song to dance along to.
A song that illustrated abusive relationships, “Love the Way You Lie” captured the hearts of listeners with Eminem’s smooth raps and Rihanna’s amazing vocals. It was ranked one in several record charts for being so relatable and moving.
The top songs for 2009 and 2008 are “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas and “Human” by The Killers respectively. Learn more about Spotify’s Decade of Music here.
