Remember These Things on the Internet That Scared Us When We Were Kids?

This Momo Challenge scare has thrown parents, children, and everyone on social media in a panic. The photo of the grotesque head circulating around social media as the face of this freaky challenge is enough to make us quit scrolling down our newsfeeds for a while.
We sympathize with traumatized kids who saw the photo and were genuinely scared of it. It took us back to the days when we too suffered jump scares and creepy images, although it was all harmless joshing at the end of the day. We were gullible enough to look for the cat in the photo, watch a calm commercial, or even play a fun game and then the horror would smack us right in the face and scar us forever.

The Maze
The challenge of going through an online maze without touching the walls sounded exciting enough when we were kids. You weren’t allowed to bump the walls and as the passage gets narrower, we had to put our faces close to the screen. And then boom! A moment of panic, a moment of almost punching the screen, and three weeks of nightmares begin.
Color Vision Deficiency
I don’t know about you but this eye test got me good. Remember getting intrigued by this test and wondering if you were colorblind? And then you went ahead and took it instead of going to an eye doctor because you’ll believe everything the internet tells you. We must all have deserved that toe-curling moment of panic.
Creepypasta

Anything Creepypasta was scary when we were kids. Squidward committing suicide? Mickey Mouse depressed? Candle Cove? Robert the Doll? That’s some next level voodoo we were gullible enough to believe in.
Simply put, creepypastas are short horror stories and urban legends that are written in a way that makes you feel as if these things happened in real life. Some even act as modern-day chain messages, passing on the responsibility of spreading the story to the reader.

Car commercial
Uploaded in 2005 as a commercial for a German drink, this peaceful car ride is anything but. For most of us, this was our first jump scare video often showed by a friend under the guise of helping to look for a ghost in the car. Remember ripping out your headphones or running away from the computer a millisecond after that screamer pops up?
The creepy rocking chair

When you were shown this as a kid you waited for something to happen because what on earth were you looking at? It’s a rocking chair? And then something happens that will scar you for the rest of your young adult life.

Slenderman’s pressed suit, long limbs, and featureless face has been creeping humanity out since his name emerged in a creepypasta in 2009. The creature is said to target kids and teenagers obsessed with him and force them to do things on his behalf.
The Slenderman terror bled into real life when in 2014, two girls lured their friend into a forest and stabbed her repeatedly claiming it was to please Slenderman.
