Life can get really challenging at times. Maybe you’re facing heartbreak, stressful days at work, or are just feeling blue. You don’t have to dismiss or deny these feelings. It’s okay to let yourself feel it all. Need an excuse to cry? These tearjerker movies will definitely leave your eyes puffy and nose stuffy after:
Marley & Me
An adorable dog and a loving family – that’s a killer combo right there. Marley & Me is actually a novel by John Grogan in 2005. As if the novel wasn’t heartbreaking enough, it got its movie adaptation three years later starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. They started as a young couple who adopted a dog, Marley, and worked their way through life: from moving houses to starting a new family. It perfectly captures the saying that a dog is truly a man’s best friend. Pet lovers, gear up with a roll of tissue or two, because you’re in for one hell of a ride.
Up
Mr. Fredrickson, Mr. Fredrickson! You may remember Up as that 2009 Disney film about a cute chubby boy scout, Russell, who meets a grumpy old man, Carl, then uses balloons to make his house fly. But the heart of the story is deeper than that. What makes this film so special is that iconic montage showing Carl and his wife Ellie’s story. Pixar was able to condense years of the couple’s life into a four-minute bittersweet montage that will definitely make your eyes sweat. Also, be prepared for the moment when they finally reach Paradise Falls. We bawled.
The Pursuit of Happyness
Yes, it’s really spelled that way. The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 biopic starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith, where they retell the true story of a struggling father and son in the 1980s. After losing all his life’s savings on a product that didn’t sell, Will’s wife leaves him and he’s left with his son. They were left switching from different shelters and even end up sleeping in a public comfort room just to make ends meet. From years of struggle to finally tasting success, The Pursuit of Happyness shows that hope, patience, and perseverance will bring you to greater heights. If you want something, you should go get it.
The Fault in Our Stars
This novel-turned-into-a-movie is probably John Green’s most popular work. The novel became an instant hit when it was released in 2012 and I still remember 14-year old me ugly crying as I read its last chapters. Two years later, a movie adaptation was released and it’s as heartbreaking as ever. It’s the story of teenagers Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters who meet in the most unconventional way: a cancer support group. They embark on a journey to meet Hazel’s most favorite author in Amsterdam and in the end, you’ll realize how to value time with your loved ones because one day, they might be taken away from you.
Miracle in Cell No. 7

There is a long list of great Korean films, and one of them is Miracle in Cell No. 7. You’ve probably heard about this 2013 movie and it’s truly heartbreaking. It’s about a mentally ill man who was forced to admit to a murder he didn’t commit. He then builds friendships with his cellmates who helped him smuggle his daughter inside the prison cell. The movie perfectly captures life in prison and relationships; no wonder why it became the seventh highest-grossing Korean film of all time.
Me Before You
Me Before You is another movie adaptation of a novel. It’s a romance novel by Jojo Moyes published in 2012 and a film adaptation was released in 2016. Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and The Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin took the lead roles in the movie. A paralyzed man, Will Traynor, gets taken care of an uber-bubbly girl, Louisa Clark. Will had built high walls but later on, develops a relationship with Louisa.
Someone Great

Someone Great is a 2019 Netflix film that created so much buzz on its release, mainly due to its relatability. It’s about a music journalist who ends her long-term relationship to pursue her writing career. She then takes her two best friends to a last girl’s night out before moving to the other side of the country. The movie gives a realistic portrayal of breakups, and it’s even made better with the cast’s chemistry. It teaches us that though heartbreak is painful, we should accept it eventually to grow.
Swing Kids

Are you a fan of Crash Landing On You? You’ll definitely enjoy this film as it portrays life North and South Korean lives during the Korean War. Swing Kids is a 2018 musical film that takes place in a prison camp in the 1950s. Amid the war, an odd group is formed with the same love of tap dancing: a rebellious North Korean, an American tap dancer who used to perform in Broadway, two South Koreans, and a Chinese soldier. This movie will make you want to dance, laugh, and most especially cry. Honestly, I still think about this movie sometimes and it’s still heartbreaking. Plus, its lead character, the rebellious North Korean Roh Kisoo is actually a K-pop idol! He’s EXO’s main vocalist, Doh Kyungsoo.
