This Week in Weird: ‘Survivor Philippines’ Officially Starts on June 1, Metro Manila’s Shift to GCQ

Yesterday the Philippines recorded 539 new cases of coronavirus, the highest recorded in the country in a single day. The total count has reached more than 15,000 and it shows no signs of slowing down. This is why most of the country was surprised when President Rodrigo Duterte announced that starting June 1, NCR will be on General Community Quarantine (GCQ) which means more establishments and businesses are allowed to reopen to aid the country’s economy.

On social media, people knew the real deal: we obviously aren’t ready for GCQ come June 1. [But yes, we know that people need to make a living. — Editor] People took to Twitter to express their concerns, and it wasn’t before long before they accidentally (or intentionally) trended ‘Survivor Philippines’.

If you were confused and thinking the actual show Survivor Philippines will be making a comeback, you’re in for a major disappointment. It might not be back but we’re about to experience it in real life.

It’s the fact that even though the majority of workers now need to report to work, buses and jeepneys are still suspended and other public transportations are only allowed limited capacity. For employees who need to get to work, make sure to leave your homes 6 hours earlier. Or get yourself a bike.

We might seem to joke about this but the safety of every Filipino should be our priority. We’re transitioning into a new phase and everything is bound to be chaotic for a little while. If you’re one of the thousands of Pinoys who need to go to work again, make sure you carry the right items with you at all times: alcohol, face mask, face shields, and even gloves. Wash your hands frequently and maintain social distancing at all times. And if you don’t have to go out, listen to Cat Arambulo and stay at home.
