Finally! The Rock introduced Black Adam!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been many things in his career, but aside from The Scorpion King (2002) and Doom (2005), he hasn’t really played a full-on villain. As the embodiment of what would happen if Shazam used his powers for evil, the possibilities of the famed action star taking on Zachary Levi boggle the mind. Now, they haven’t actually been able to shoot anything for the film, but after so many false starts (Johnson was first announced in 2014), rumors, and speculation, it’s great to see the film is finally going to happen.

Michael Keaton will return in Flashpoint!

Ok, so this one didn’t have a fancy “motion comic” like the Black Adam reveal, but the piece of concept art showing Keaton’s iconic caped crusader alongside Ezra Miller’s Flash in the upcoming Flashpoint film was enough to warrant a place on this list. Said to be based on the notion of multiple universes introduced in the DC live-action TV shows over the last 8 years, Keaton will reportedly feature alongside returning Batman Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl). It’s been 28 years since Keaton donned the cowl in Batman Returns, so the news that he would be in this film, along with Ben Affleck, definitely makes Flashpoint a film to watch out for.

Team-based homicide in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League!

Despite their feature film debut leaving filmgoers wanting, the idea of a superteam comprised of bad guys is a concept ripe with potential. Coming from Rocksteady (the makers of the acclaimed Arkham Asylum games), the game is described as a shooter that lets you take on the world’s greatest superheroes in single-player or co-op mode to accomplish the titular mission. Wild, wacky, and irreverent, with Harley Quinn featured front and center, this looks like a whole lot of fun.

Gotham Knights will put players in a world without Batman!

Speaking of the Arkham games, Gotham Knights may look like the logical continuation of that series and its universe, but its creators have assured audiences that it’s an alternate timeline. Good thing, then, as the trailer reveals the game to be set in a world where Batman has been killed, and his successors must step up to protect Gotham from villains seeking to take advantage of the situation. Heeding the call are Nightwing, Red Hood, Robin, and Batgirl, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. While it’s too early to tell if the game will be any good, it seems that WB Games Montreal is eager to prove themselves in the wake of their (compared to the main Arkham series) debut game, Arkham Origins (2013)

Our first real look at Battinson!

Like 007 or Spider-Man, it’s always an event when iconic characters are recast, but few castings cause as much vitriol and debate as that of Batman. However, for as many people scoffed at the notions of comedian Michael Keaton (Batman, Batman Returns) or the wooden Ben Affleck (Batman V Superman, Justice League) taking on the cowl, it’s undeniable that their interpretations were able to win over legions of fans. With Robert Pattinson (Twilight, The Lighthouse) now taking on the role (in a universe completely removed from the mainline DCEU series of films), fans will be treated to what looks to be another unique interpretation of the Dark Knight. And while this writer has no qualms whatsoever about Zoe Kravitz (of TV’s woefully underrated High Fidelity) as Catwoman as far as race-swapping goes, one can’t help wishing they’d found someone less bland than Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, Casino Royale) as Commissioner Gordon.

Wonder Woman’s nemesis revelaed in the new WW84 trailer!

Kristen Wiig is a beloved comedienne, so her casting as Wonder Woman villain Cheetah raised a few eyebrows. Could someone known for being funny onscreen even be taken seriously as a threat to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time? Surprisingly, if this latest trailer is anything to go by, the answer is YES. Starting out as the timid Barbara Minerva, she is, at some point, transformed into the villainous Cheetah, and able to take on our favorite Amazon in hand-to-hand combat. With director Patty Jenkins (Monster) back in the director’s seat, and Gal Gadot back in the title role, we can’t wait to see this one on the big screen.

The utter insanity of Suicide Squad!

In the limbo between James Gunn’s (Slither) firing (and subsequent re-hiring) from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he was tapped to direct the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. An apparent no-brainer, Gunn’s off-kilter sensibility and irreverent sense of humor seem perfectly honed to deliver on the promise of the 2016 film’s legendary Bohemian Rhapsody-powered trailer. With a cast list that’s honestly too long to list out here, including a returning Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey), John Cena (Trainwreck, Bumblebee), and Idris Elba (Cats, Hobbes and Shaw), The Suicide Squad looks to be in good hands.

Our best look yet at Justice League: The Snyder Cut!

There’s precious little to be said about this that hasn’t been said already, but it’s safe to say that expectations were through the roof for this one, and Zack Snyder did not disappoint, unleashing the first full trailer for his once-mythical cut of 2017’s Justice League! Infamously replaced in production by Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the original film was, shall we, say, not well-received, so it’s absolutely a big deal that Warner Brothers is shelling out the tens of millions of dollars needed to bring his vision to HBO Max next year. While the song choice is a bit on the nose, it’s impossible not to be excited at the promise of an actual good movie starring the world’s greatest superheroes.
