Nearly a year from the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Philippines, talks of procuring vaccines are well underway. Some cities have announced that they have secured a number of supplies for their residents, while the national government has also been in talks with several different suppliers. According to Philippine vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr, the government could begin the vaccine distribution as soon as February 2021. But what should you know about the different brands of COVID-19 vaccines that the Philippines may roll out for the public?

Where was it developed? United Kingdom
What type of vaccine is it? Viral vector vaccine (which is a vaccine that introduces a modified version of a different harmless virus (called the vector) into our body to teach our cells to recognize the spike protein found only on the surface of the virus and understand that it does not belong inside the body, which then leads to the triggering of our immune system and the production of antibodies)

What type of vaccine is it? Protein sub-unit vaccine (which is a vaccine that uses purified versions of the virus, as opposed to the whole pathogen, that has lost its disease-producing ability in order to trigger immune response in the body)

Which countries have approved it for emergency limited use? None yet. The vaccine is still in clinical trials in different countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Mexico.

What type of vaccine is it? Inactivated vaccine (which is a vaccine that makes use of the killed version of the virus to trigger the immune system and that may require booster shots since it doesn’t provide protection as strong as those from live vaccines)

What is the estimated cost? PHP 3,629.50 per patient
Which countries have approved it for emergency limited use? China, Indonesia, Bolivia, and the Philippines, which approved it on February 22, 2021. But because of its lower efficacy rating, FDA Director General Rolando Enrique Domingo says that it is NOT recommended for healthcare workers.
