We’ll Be Up All Night Crying: The Internet is Heartbroken Over Daft Punk’s Break Up

Feb 23, 2021   •   Ina Louise Manto

In case you missed it, Daft Punk has broken up. Yup, the iconic faceless-helmet-and-glove-wearing duo has called it quits after nearly three decades of making music together – 28 years to be exact. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the DJs behind Daft Punk, are indeed pioneers in electronic and house music, with numerous hit singles and albums, and 12 Grammy nominations, and six wins. Now that they’ve announced their break up, it seems that the internet will be up all night crying for days:

A farewell video for the fans

On February 22, Daft Punk uploaded a video to their YouTube channel named “Epilogue” to announce their retirement. The Robots first met in secondary school but it wasn’t until 1993 when they formed Daft Punk in Paris. Shown in the video is the duo walking aimlessly in a dessert with Thomas falling behind. Thomas then removes his jacket and exposes a switch with Guy-Man setup – Thomas blows up after. As of writing, there are no reasons released for their split.

They’re geniuses

First released as a single in 2000, “One More Time” is arguably Daft Punk’s biggest hit ever. The song itself is timeless and is still a banger nearly 21 years after it was released. It’s probably one of the best party songs ever, and you can’t deny the genius behind this hit.

Us for the next days

I’ll be listening to Daft Punk all week

Legends must always be remembered.

Low-budget Daft Punk for the win. Anything to remember the helmet-wearing duo. Also an advanced Halloween costume idea. You can be Daft Punk this year!

No tours for us

Spoke too soon. Here’s to all the music festival junkies who have been dreaming of concerts. We all miss the days where it’s okay to be squeezed into a crowd, sweat and whatever odor included, but you still bear with it because of the good music. P.S. Daft Punk’s first and last tour, “Alive”, happened from April 2006 to December 2007.

Night outs will never be the same

Many have spent drunken nights out with friends while dancing to Daft Punk and once the bars are open again, maybe the memories of the good old days will come back. It will never be the same again.

We were excited for a moment

It was a trap we weren’t prepared for.

It’s a good morning. You check Twitter and find over a million tweets about Daft Punk. You feel giddy for a moment because it has been eight years since they last released music. The anticipation builds. Then you find out there wouldn’t be any more of it. How’s your day going?

An end of an era

daft punk not doing their job for eight years and then announcing they quit is aspirational

Kidding aside, it still feels like yesterday where the world was jamming to “Get Lucky” with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. It has been eight years since Random Access Memories was released and sometimes you just wish you can go back to simpler times.

It has been a good run for Daft Punk and they will always be remembered as pioneers and legends. For now, let’s pay tribute to the duo by hosting our next (virtual) parties with them blasting in the background.
