8 Excuses Students Can’t Make Anymore Once Face-to-Face Classes Begin Again

After almost two years of online classes, the PH government has green-lit limited face-to-face classes for some schools in low-risk areas for COVID-19. Applications for in-person classes start in December 2021 for areas under Alert Level 2 and in January 2022 for areas under Alert Level 3. That means that by next year, it’s highly likely that students will be back in the hallowed halls of their schools, high-fiving masked friends in the hallways, and comparing vaccine brands. That also means they might be saying goodbye to online classes (for now) and the convenience of staying at home. Here are 8 online classes excuses students will miss saying during online classes:
“Sorry late ako, wala po kaming internet.”
Internet connection in the Philippines is a daily gamble. You could be having a strong connection one minute and without warning, it’ll turn spotty for the rest of the day. Sometimes the connection is horrible for an entire week — an occurrence which some students (and employees) either find annoying or are thankful for. Either way, we’ve definitely used this excuse for being late to online classes at least once.#NoJudgment if you were just too lazy to get up from bed.
“Sir putol putol po kayo, ‘di marinig.”

What’s the result of a bad internet connection? Choppy voices. An excuse you can’t make any more during face-to-face classes when you’re buying time to think of an answer at recitation. Or when you want to skip answering altogether.
“Ang ingay po ni mama/ng pusa/manok/(insert other animals).”
There’s always that one neighbor’s chicken fighting to get its voice heard in the microphone whenever you unmute. Sometimes it’s your mom getting angry at your siblings in the background too. One person’s noise is another person’s excuse to keep their answers during recit short. Can’t use that for face-to-face classes.
“Sira po camera ko, ‘di ako makakapag on-cam.”
We’ve all made this excuse at least once for the past two years. When you’re too lazy to look presentable, you simply tell the people in the meeting that your camera isn’t working. Sorry na lang. But then again, for face-to-face classes, this excuse won’t work anymore. People are actually expecting you to take a bath in the morning, dress up, and look presentable.
“Sorry! Biglang na-leave meeting ‘di ko alam kung bakit.”
Sometimes our computers are working overtime, they break down and suddenly close important windows. Sometimes they get the timing right too — just when your instructor is about to pull up names for a recitation. So you take that bathroom break, restart your computer just so everything functions well, and re-join the class once the storm has passed. Nice.
“Sorry! Di ko na-unmute.” (Pero yung totoo nag-go-Google lang)
“What is your answer?” says your professor. And you scramble to look for an answer while you try to look calm in the video. After a few seconds of trying to Google or glance at your notes and pretending to struggle, you apologize for “answering” while on mute. During a face-to-face class, you can’t exactly say “Wait lang. Sorry po naka-mute,” while biding for time.
“Wala po akong load, ‘di ako makapag-data.”
Not everyone has internet routers at home, instructors know this. So when students reach out to them to let them know they don’t have load for data, it’s understandable. During face-to-face classes, the only way you can use the “Wala po akong load” excuse is when your prof asks you if they can use your phone to text their friend.
“Hala, ‘di ako makapag-present. Ano ba’ng pipindutin?”
Online classes can get confusing, even for Gen Z. Which button is for screen sharing again? And will the participants see every single tab you’ve got open? Even the one where you’re helping to stream a music video during class? In real life, a.k.a in-person classes, all you need is a USB and a projector and your excuses are blown away.
But no matter how much we might love online classes, we love in-person classes even more. Mostly because we can’t wait to sit with our friends and at least look at them for moral support when recitations are too much!
