We think most of us can agree that Twitter has gone to the dogs ever since Elon Musk took over. The guy can send rockets to space, but he can’t seem to keep Twitter from turning into a hot mess. Enter: Mark Zuckerberg with Threads, the new(ish) social media app from Meta that promises to be the “Twitter killer.”

But if Threads is serious about burying Twitter, it has to actually be better than the app it wants to replace. While Threads has its pros (a clean UI, an easy way to find Instagram friends), we’re not completely convinced it’s there… yet.

We’ve been tinkering around Threads all day, and we have some suggestions. To the powers-that-be at Meta, we hope you’re listening.

1. No more randos in the main timeline, pls

This should be obvious, but we don’t want random verified accounts pushed in our faces. All we want to see are the people we follow. Most of these verified accounts aren’t even relevant to our interests. We signed up to follow our friends, family, and maybe a few celebrities we actually care about – not some random politicians or influencers who just want to sell us stuff.

2. A trending page

You know where Threads can put popular tweets and recommended content? Not on our main timeline, but a separate Trending page. You know, something that’ll keep us up-to-date on trending hashtags, what’s going viral, etc. Isn’t that why we use Twitter in the first place?

3. Basic photo editing

One thing that Threads has got going for it is how it handles media – you can share up to 10 photos and/or videos in one post. HOWEVER. It doesn’t have a basic photo edit function. We’re not asking for Photoshop-level skills here – just a simple crop and color correction tool would do the trick.

4. A chronological timeline

Remember the good old days of Twitter when we could scroll through our timelines and actually see tweets in chronological order? Can we have that again? Is that too much to ask for? We don’t need an algorithm telling us what we should care about. We’re perfectly capable of deciding that on our own. If Threads actually gives us what we wanted from Twitter, maybe we’ll stay.

5. Dark/Light Mode flexibility

If you’ve been frantically scouring the Threads app in search for the Dark Mode button, we have some bad news for you: it doesn’t exist. Dark Mode does exist for Threads, but you’ll have to switch your entire phone to Dark if you want to activate it. Let us choose, Meta!!!!

6. An actually useful search mode

Currently, Threads’ search mode only lets users look for accounts. But that’s not all we want to search for. We want to see what people are saying about a certain topic, or check out the latest memes on a particular hashtag.

7. An account switcher

Let’s be honest, most of us have more than one Twitter account these days – one for stanning, one “professional” account, and maybe even one for our pets (don’t judge). That means giving us the ability to switch between accounts without having to log out and log back in. Facebook and Instagram have been doing this for years, so we know Meta has it in them.

8. An Edit button

If Threads really wants to seal the deal and kill Twitter, they need to give us what we’ve been asking for since forever: an edit function (that we don’t have to pay for).

So, Threads, let’s make history and become the first major microblogging platform to deliver the holy grail of functions — the ability to edit our posts. Trust us, if you pull this off, Twitter won’t know what hit ’em.
