The Vanishing Act: An Introvert’s Survival Guide to Escaping Social Gatherings

Sep 7, 2023   •   Edgardo Toledo

If you’re an introvert, you know that attending huge festivities or get-togethers can be a struggle. So what do you do when you’re trapped at a social event, drained and weary? Here are some ideas from Reddit:

8. The classic “someone’s calling” excuse

in adultingph

This one’s long been a go-to excuse to leave parties. You can ask a loved one to call you or simply pretend there’s an urgent matter that badly needs your attention. The more convincing your acting, the better! Once you’re outside the venue, this is where you call a ride, sit back, and text whoever invited you that you need to go home ASAP.

7. Mom this, mom that

Who hasn’t pulled the classic mom card as an excuse to get out of an event? Nobody dares to question why your mom suddenly asked you to go home just right when the party’s gearing up. They either nod or politely ask when you’ll come again.

6. Eat and run

A great party isn’t complete without good food, so why not make the most of the spread? Don’t forget to bring some food containers — these are your gateway to ~*Sharon*~ whatever’s left on the buffet table before hurrying to the nearest exit. Is this tacky and rude? Sure. But at least you won’t get invited to any more unwanted gatherings, right?

5. When in doubt, use your phone

So let’s say this is an oh-so-important gathering with no escape route in sight. You can always use your phone to distract yourself from too much socialization. Although it is often perceived as rude behavior, you can play games, watch videos, or read the news. Take your pick. And if you want to take it up a notch, wear your headphones and let the music wash out the blaring party noise surrounding you.

4. Embrace your wallflower status

Social butterflies live for parties and socializing. If you see them taking over the whole event, let them! Before you know it, the party’s over, and you don’t have to make much effort to mingle with other guests.

3. Say “no,” but offer to help in whatever way you can

Let the event organizers know you’re willing to go the extra mile to make the gathering successful, even if you’re only there in spirit. Even if they don’t accept your offer, what matters is that you expressed interest in participating in the festivities, even if you won’t be attending the event itself.

2. Be vocal about your cut-off time

in adultingph

One of the biggest misconceptions about introverts is they hate ALL social gatherings. Some introverts enjoy mingling and intimate conversations. However, you can’t expect their social battery to stay powered until daybreak. Introverts have limits, and that’s ok – don’t we all? So if you’re an introvert, just tell your friends that you’re only staying until a certain time, and you can go home in peace.

1. Or just don’t go at all

Believe it or not, you can say”no”. The truth is, most people will understand if you decline invitations. Instead of enduring the torture that is forcing yourself to attend a gathering, just don’t go. Simple, right?
