The last few days of the year are the perfect time to unload some heavy emotional baggage before you turn over a new leaf in 2024. You probably have things to say to a lot of people whom you’ve decided to leave behind in 2023, one way or another. If you can’t say it to their face, you’ll be delighted to know there’s an online platform where you can leave an anonymous shoutout to your TOTGA (the one that got away), your crush, an estranged friend, or whoever you want to talk to before the year ends.
Based on their website, The Unsent Project started in 2015 as a project “to figure out what color people see love in.” Rora Blue, the founder, asked her friends to submit messages in colors that they associate with their first love. Nearly a decade later, the website has a collection of over 5 million unsent text messages to first loves, best friends, exes, parents, siblings, and even pets. It became an emotional outlet for those who needed it.
It’s pretty straightforward. Click the “Submit” button if you’re ready to send that note out into the world. You’re only allowed one submission every 24 hours. Next, type the name of the recipient and your heartfelt message. Choose a color you associate that person with and hit the submit button. Your intended recipient won’t know you sent that message (they probably won’t even know you took part in The Unsent Project), but at least you had an outlet to express your pent-up emotions.
If you resorted to an anonymous note to confess your feelings, chances are someone did the same thing for you. The Unsent Project lets you look up any name and read all the notes sent under that name. Of course, you won’t know if you’re the specific Cristina or Paul or Ina the sender had in mind when they sent it, but there’s something so poetic and heartwrenching scrolling through notes for your namesake knowing they made an impact on someone’s life that way.
Currently, The Unsent Project is in the process of thoroughly reviewing submissions to make sure they don’t violate the guidelines. If you can only see a handful of notes, that’s because all submissions made before July 9, 2023, are unavailable for viewing. But don’t worry, they’ll be on the website again soon.
So, ready to send a message to that person?
