Swedish-born, Iranian-Persian singer-songwriter Snoh Aalegra has been making waves in the music industry. With her unique blend of R&B, soul, and jazz influences, she’s earned a loyal fanbase, critical acclaim, and even a Grammy nomination. Karpos Live is bringing Snoh to the Philippines this month, so there’s no better time to get acquainted with the talented artist. To get you started, here are Snoh Aalegra facts you need to know.
Snoh has been nominated three times for the Grammys. In 2022, she was nominated for Best R&B Performance for “Lost You” and Best R&B Album for Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies. Then in 2023, her song “Do 4 Love” got her another nomination for Best R&B Performance.
After Prince discovered Snoh’s music in 2014, the legendary icon reached out to Snoh online, gushing about her voice. He then became Snoh’s mentor until his passing in 2016. At one point, he even surprised her by playing one of her songs during a show.
“I wish he was here to witness how I’ve developed and seen that I’ve really taken in a lot of his aura into my music and stage performance,” Snoh said in an interview with Metro.co.uk. “I’ve really been inspired by him.”
She was born and raised in Sweden. While many fans know her as Snoh Aalegra, she was actually born Shahrzad Fooladi. Following her parents’ divorce, her mother insisted on changing her last name from Fooladi to Nowrozi, which means “new day” in Farsi.
Snoh fell in love with music after listening to The Bodyguard soundtrack when she was seven years old. When she was nine, she started writing songs. By the time she was 13, she had signed her first artist development deal with Sony Music Sweden. (However, she left Sony Music Sweden after eight years without having released any music.)
Aside from Prince, Aalegra has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry. She has collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Common, Vince Staples, and Tyler, The Creator. Drake also sampled her single “Time” on his 2017 track “Do Not Disturb”.
Snoh Aalegra draws inspiration from icons like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, James Brown, Brandy, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, Robyn, and Mariah Carey. Beyond these iconic figures, she also finds inspiration from film score orchestras and arrangements, which add a cinematic depth to her sound.
Snoh Aalegra is set to perform in Metro Manila Manila for the first time on May 30, 2024 at the Filinvest Tent in Alabang. Expect to hear her hit singles such as “I Want You Around,” “Whoa,” and “Lost You”. Don’t miss your chance and grab your tickets at tickelo.com today!
Though a chronic dabbler in whatever tickles her fancy, Cristina claims she can count her passions on one hand: feminism, literature, the environment, embroidery, and the power of a solid pop song. She lives in Uniqlo lounge pants and refuses to leave the house without a winged eye.
