With only a few weeks left until Christmas, the holiday spirit is in full swing. And the best way to amp up the excitement is through a musical featuring the hit songs of Mr. Christmas himself, Jose Mari Chan!
Produced by Repertory Philippines, Going Home to Christmas: A Jose Mari Chan Musical is its first-ever original jukebox musical and features 22 hit songs from Jose Mari Chan’s massive catalog, brought to life by a powerful ensemble composed of talented theater actors and a highly esteemed team of celebrated artists.
Written by REP stalwarts Robbie Guevara, Luna Griño-Inocian and Joel Trinidad, Going Home to Christmas follows the passengers and crew at a local airport as they head home on Christmas Eve.
As they end up in unexpected encounters, these people from all walks of life find that Christmas is not only an event or a place, but it’s the love we share with others.
Relatable and heartwarming, Going Home to Christmas is an ode to all the things that make up a Pinoy Christmas. Viewers can find all the Pinoy holiday cliches, including passengers lining up in a crowded airport, flights being delayed, balikbayans arriving, Jose Mari Chan singing wherever you go, and more.
Jose Mari Chan may be best known for his Christmas hits like “Christmas in Our Hearts,” “A Perfect Christmas,” “Going Home to Christmas,” but this musical will make you remember that his discography has a lot more in store, including romantic ballads like “Please Be Careful With My Heart,” “Beautiful Girl,” “Tell Me Your Name,” and “Hahanapin Ko.” It’s perfectly nostalgic, especially for those who grew up listening to to Jose Mari Chan’s songs.
Divided into two acts, the musical runs for a little over two hours, including a 10-minute break. The first act was engaging as we are introduced to various characters, including a father-son duo heading home to their extended family, a balikbayan being fetched by her niece, a grandparents-grandson trio visiting from overseas, and various airport staff members from airline check-in counter crew to cafe baristas and janitors.
During the second act, it may at times feel a little drawn out, but as all these characters close these chapters in their stories, the audience is given a good reminder: the essence of the Pinoy Christmas is the spirit of giving and the love of family.
Only running for two weeks, Going Home to Christmas is a must-watch for family, friends, lovers, and anyone who loves to celebrate a truly Pinoy Christmas.
The show runs in the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium located inside the RCBC Plaza, Ayala Avenue, Makati City.
