What Does a Senator *ACTUALLY* Do? 8 Things EVERY Filipino Should Know

Mar 11, 2025   •   Cristina Morales

Ever wondered what senators actually do besides popping up in headlines and election campaigns? Whether you’re a first-time voter or just trying to understand where your tax money is going, here’s a quick breakdown of what a senator of the Philippines should bring to the table.

(If you’re up for a deep dive, Article VI, Section 2 of the Constitution spells out their duties, but consider this your TL;DR version.)

Ano Ba Talaga ang Ginagawa ng Isang Senador? 8 Bagay na Dapat Alam ng Bawat Pinoy

1. The basics: They make laws

When you think of senators, lawmaking is probably the first thing that comes to mind—and you’re not wrong. Senators draft, debate, and vote on bills covering anything from healthcare reforms to environmental laws. Once a bill passes through the Senate and the House, it can become a law.

But that’s not the only thing Senators do…

2. They investigate

Sometimes, things go south—corruption scandals, public health crises, you name it. Senators can conduct investigations “in aid of legislation.” This means they can gather evidence and hold hearings to determine if current laws are being followed or if new ones need to be put in place. In other words, senators make sure the government is doing its job.

3. They help decide budgets

Your senators have their hands all over the nation’s budget. They help decide how taxes are spent, ensuring programs — whether it’s education, healthcare, or infrastructure — get funded. This also means they can decide which programs get axed. So if you’re passionate about a particular issue, it’s worth writing to your senator and letting them know where you stand.

4. They approve (or disapprove) treaties and international deals

If there’s a pending international agreement or a treaty with another country, the Senate plays judge and jury on those, either giving a thumbs-up or vetoing the deal altogether. This ensures that the agreements align with national interests.

5. They keep Martial Law in check

If *knock on wood* things get chaotic and Martial Law is declared, senators are the ones who decide if it’s valid and whether it sticks. They’re the checkpoint that ensures the government doesn’t overstep its boundaries. That’s a big deal for democracy.

6. They handle impeachments

Yes, senators are the ones who conduct impeachment trials. If the House accuses a government official (like the President) of misconduct, the Senate acts as the court to determine if they need to be removed.

7. They represent us all

Unlike district representatives who focus on one area, senators represent the entire country. Their job includes listening to Filipinos’ concerns, advocating for issues that matter to us, and ensuring no one is left in the dust.

8. They keep each other (and everyone else) accountable

Senators are expected to disclose their financial interests to avoid conflicts of interest. Plus, when filing laws, they’re obligated to ensure they’re not pushing personal agendas. Basically, they should be setting an example for transparency and ethics.

So, what now? Why should you care?

Senators wield power in shaping our nation’s future, from education policies to how tax money is spent. Your vote determines which individuals take on this huge responsibility.

The takeaway? Vote wisely. Research your candidates and pick the ones who align with your values—and who you know can get the job done. Because when senators do their job right, everyone wins.

Do your research, kids!
