Future-Proofing: Inside Mapúa Malayan Digital College’s Bold Vision for AI-Powered Learning in the PH

Jul 1, 2025   •   8List Editor

Artificial intelligence (AI), one of the most transformative technologies in recent history, is changing the world as fast as ever, not just in major industries but even in the daily aspects of life. The world marvels at how AI automates tasks, personalizes experiences, drives innovations, and improves efficiency across sectors. From revolutionizing healthcare to modernizing education, AI has penetrated and advanced several industries across the globe, reshaping the way humans live and work.

In the education sector, AI addresses long-standing challenges and makes learning more accessible and efficient by innovating teaching practices and enabling personalized learning. In addition to delivering smarter educational tools, it also serves as a collaborator to humans, as it amplifies human capabilities and transforms the learning experience for students and teachers alike.

Filipino students and university leaders are generally accepting of and excited about the ways artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting education, according to the 2024 AI in Higher Ed study by global edtech leader Anthology.

It revealed that, for university leaders in the Philippines, enhancing student engagement and interactivity, providing personalized experiences, and revolutionizing teaching and learning methods are among the top roles of AI in higher education. Meanwhile, students see AI as support in enhancing engagement and interactivity, revolutionizing teaching and learning methods, and helping generate ideas.

Mapúa Malayan Digital College leads the shift toward AI-powered, job-ready education in PH

While the response to AI remains positive, the country’s use of the technology in education still remains limited and needs strategic improvement and implementation. To empower the Philippine education sector as it continues to evolve and adopt emerging technologies, Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC) is leading the use of AI in digital college education. It recently launched its upgraded AI-powered learning model and introduced the MMDC Certification Programs, a suite of digital microcredential courses aimed at helping working professionals and non-graduates reskill and upskill for in-demand careers.

MMDC’s enhanced learning model marks a significant leap from its previous system, moving beyond a standard Learning Management System (LMS) to delivering its exclusive and curated curricula through Coursera, a leading global online learning platform. With this upgrade, students not only gain access to MMDC’s specialized content, but also to courses from top universities and organizations worldwide. This enables them to earn industry-recognized microcredentials alongside their degrees and make their education truly global.

“We upgraded our learning model to deliver a cutting-edge, future-ready education that aligns with global industry demands. MMDC is now able to deliver advanced AI tools, robust platform, and microcredentials, ensuring that students gain both academic excellence and practical, in-demand skills,” said Derrick Latreille, Chief Learning Officer at MMDC. “This upgrade reflects our commitment to empowering Filipino students with accessible, innovative learning that drives career success in a rapidly evolving world.”

MMDC’s move to leverage AI raises the bar for interactive digital learning in the Philippines. AI tutors are already embedded across all courses, offering real-time guidance. Later this year, the digital college will also introduce AI teaching assistants for personalized project support and AI role-play features for immersive, scenario-based learning, designed to simulate real-world workplace situations and sharpen decision-making skills.

Among the offerings utilizing the upgraded learning model are MMDC’s Bachelor of Science in Information Technology programs. Its BS IT Business-focused Program includes specializations in Data Analytics, Marketing Technology, and Entrepreneurship Technology, while its BS IT Development-focused Program includes specializations in Software Development and Network & Cybersecurity. These digital programs use the Projects, Problems, Cases (PPC) learning model, which develops students’ real-world skills, including critical thinking, leadership, creativity, analysis, and collaboration that employers look for when hiring.

To extend its impact beyond traditional college learners, MMDC also launched the MMDC Certification Programs, designed for job seekers with no work experience, working professionals who want a promotion, and career shifters exploring new opportunities. These certification tracks, which can be completed within three to four months for as low as PHP 9,000, cover high-demand fields such as virtual assistance, marketing, and technology.

MMDC Certification Programs include Virtual Assistance, IBM Data Analytics, Meta Social Media Marketing, Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce, and Adobe Content Creator. MMDC is set to launch more certification programs soon.

“MMDC Certification Programs address a crucial gap. It’s for people who want to move forward professionally and get better jobs but don’t have the time or resources for a full college degree. With this program, they can gain relevant skills quickly and affordably, opening doors to better opportunities,” shared Latreille.

The new offerings reflect MMDC’s response to long-standing challenges in Philippine education—particularly accessibility, relevance to industry, and career alignment. By combining globally recognized microcredentials with cutting-edge AI support, MMDC empowers students and professionals alike to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving job market.

Future-ready education for all

The shift to the upgraded college learning model and the launch of the MMDC Certification Programs demonstrate the institution’s mission to redefine what it means to be college-ready and career-ready in the Philippines.

“By leveraging technology, we make highly relevant education and microcredentials widely available, bridging the gap between the academe and industry needs. AI-powered tools enhance learning with personalized support and practical skill-building, unavailable at most Philippine colleges,” said Latreille.

MMDC’s upgraded college learning model and Certification Programs are poised to redefine career opportunities for Filipino professionals. As emerging technologies, including AI, continue to reshape industries, MMDC ensures that Filipino learners are not just keeping pace but leading the charge.
