8 Reasons to Take Up Tai Chi This Year

Jan 16, 2017   •   Ime Morales

If you think that tai chi is only for old people, you are mistaken. Although tai chi is popular with the older population, it is a martial art that is also enjoyed by younger practitioners. It offers numerous benefits, especially for those who are willing to give it their commitment and the required discipline.

First created as a fighting art, tai chi originated in China in the Wu-dang Mountains. It is said that the Taoist monk Zhang San Feng was inspired by the movements of a snake and a crane that he saw fighting one day. From that time, the art evolved through many years and was eventually developed into various styles: Chen, Yang, Wu Yuxiang, Wu Jianquan, and Sun.

Join the ranks of Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed, and Keanu Reeves—all tai chi practitioners—and see for yourself why even poets, musicians, and artists are drawn to this gently moving meditation. One point for emphasis: get a good teacher. I cannot stress this enough.

2017 is fresh and it’s the right time to begin learning tai chi, the Supreme Ultimate Fist. Here’s why:

1. It is the fountain of youth.

Why spend on expensive plastic surgery when you can look younger for free? Show me a serious tai chi practitioner who does not look younger than his/her actual age and I’ll rest my case.

2. It is one of the keys to longer life.

Tai chi has a “dramatic track record for reversing the aging process.” It is being practiced by people from all over the world because of its regenerating effect. It can make you healthy in so many ways.

3. Tai chi will help you manage the stress.

Because of its meditative movements, tai chi can help you overcome stressful situations. It can also relax you, calm you down, and clear your mind. It is not only physical exercise (or just a martial art), because tai chi is considered to be an internal art that benefits both the physical body and one’s inner being.

4. It will make you feel better.

Tai chi does not only make you look young, it can also help you feel better and feel younger, which translates to feeling more energetic or stronger. And the best thing about it is that you can feel the change almost immediately, especially if you are training with a good teacher.

5. It does not cost a lot and does not require gear, equipment, and other expensive paraphernalia.

You can do your tai chi in the comfort of your home, in your garage or garden, in a park, by the beach, in a parking lot, in the mountains, practically anywhere. There is no special clothing or gear required. Probably the only thing you have to invest in would be your teacher’s fees.

6. It brings so many physical benefits.

Via Giphy

Studies and years of research have proven that tai chi can improve balance and flexibility. It lowers blood pressure and improves heart health. It also reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system.

7. It is good for the mind.

Via Giphy

Aside from calming the mind against stress, tai chi has been shown to reduce depression, lift moods, lower anxiety, boost confidence, sharpen the mind, and improve the quality of one’s sleep. Practitioners have noticed improvement in concentration and focus, as the movements themselves encourage mindfulness and presence.

8. It helps with the symptoms of various illnesses.

Medical studies have been conducted to show that tai chi is beneficial for patients suffering from Parkinson’s, heart ailments, fibromyalgia, balance disorders, hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and many others. With tai chi’s gentle movements and slow pace, the risk of injuries or accidents is very low. Nevertheless, the SOP if you are sick would be to get the permission of your doctor before engaging in any physical activity.

If you are interested in taking up tai chi, you can check out Peace Blossoms Internal Arts Society in UP Diliman.  You may get in touch with them through 09178456856.
