If there’s anyone who can put people of the Internet in their place these days, it’d be the Robredo sisters a.k.a the current darlings of social media. Vice President Leni Robredo’s daughters, Aika, Tricia, and Jillian aren’t simply smart women. They’re also a fun bunch you can joke around with. We’re sure you’ve heard of the inside joke that Jillian, the youngest, is VP Leni’s “paboritong anak,” prompting netizens to tease Tricia, the middle child. While these ladies humor and entertain most jokes, where should netizens draw the line? If netizens had a hard time knowing where exactly that line is, Aika and Tricia did not hesitate to remind them.

The Robredo family is currently in New York to attend Jillian’s graduation from New York University. VP Leni has been posting updates every day, ranging from her ironing Jillian’s toga to a lengthy video at the park. Supporters are hanging on to every story and detail. After all, rarely do we see VP Leni relaxing with her daughters. But some netizens have gone beyond simple admiration.

A netizen took a screenshot of the NYU graduation live stream, which some Filipinos were watching to support Jillian. In the screenshot, commenters were joking around, mentioning Aika and Tricia. Suddenly, a profile with the name ‘Tricia Robredo’ left a comment: “Aiks, gusto mo bang maging nutribun tayo?”
This is not me and I will never joke about something like this. Whoever’s doing this, please stop. :)

The screenshot on Twitter reached Tricia who shared her sentiments about being impersonated. “I’m not sure what bothers me more: being impersonated on the comments section of the livestream of my sister’s graduation or people thinking that this is something to joke about. Hindi nakakatawa at hindi nakakatuwa. Pakiusap – please stop.”

You’re concerned about historical revisionism but you joke about nutribun and red-tagging, as if these are things to be taken lightly. I will never reduce the atrocities of Martial Law for clout and entertainment. Neither should you.

Tricia reminded everyone that the atrocities of Martial Law should not be taken lightly. This includes joking around about nutribun and red-tagging, especially if you’re one of those “concerned about historical revisionism.”
Nutribun became another Internet joke after a BBM supporter said in an interview that she wants her grandchildren to be able to have some. Other netizens were quick to remind everyone that nutribun, a “ready-to-eat complete meal” was a project created by USAID to address widespread malnutrition in the ’70s. It wasn’t your basic bakery treat, it was made to meet the daily nutrient requirements of young Filipinos.
I do not talk like this. Nor do I post messages like this on public livestreams. Please stop. https://t.co/13n4xsMkg2

It wasn’t just the second-eldest who took to Twitter. Aika, VP Leni’s eldest, also had a few words for her impersonators. Aika reacted to a screenshot of her impostor commenting “Merlot shot puno” on the NYU live stream.
“I do not talk like this. Nor do I post messages like this on public livestreams. Please stop,” she tweeted.
Some netizens say that even Jillian and VP Leni herself had impersonators on the comments section and that’s pretty disturbing. In an era where everyone will believe everything even before fact-checking it, it’s safe to assume that some gullible Filipinos might think it’s the Robredos actually behind those accounts. We don’t need to tell you how potentially dangerous that could get.
VP Leni supporters pride themselves on being champions of truth. So many have made efforts to debunk fake news and fight disinformation on social media. And yet some are content to impersonate her daughters. The Robredo sisters’ posts are reminders that not everything should be done for the sake of fun. Watch out for fake news and be careful not to spread it. We’re living in an era of false narratives, online trolls, and disinformation — we have to be vigilant.
You can show your love for the Robredo family while respecting them. In fact, if you respect them, you’d be mindful of crossing the line from playful to foul. Impersonating them without their consent and using their name to post on social media? You might want to rethink that next time.
