What is the AirPods Max?

The latest accessory offering from tech giant Apple, AirPods Max is an over-ear headphone that boasts high-fidelity audio, active noise cancellation, and 20 hours listening time in a stainless steel frame that fits exceptionally well. That all sounds tempting until you hear its price tag of USD 549 or about PHP 26,000. If you’re a clean freak and you want an extra cushion set so you could alternate between them, then you’d also have to shell out another USD 69 or about PHP 3,000. Cue raised eyebrows.

The high price point has people questioning if the features of this headphone are really worth all that money. Can you hear other people’s thoughts? Can it drown out your own dark thoughts? Can you hear yourself from the future? Can it give you an echolocation ability like a whale’s?

Some people’s expectations are kind of out of this world because, well, the price is kind of out of this world, too. That PHP 26,000 is a lot of money, so if you want to put things into perspective, here are a few things you could buy with the AirPods Max price tag.

A brand new iPhone

Yes, you read that right. One of the reasons why people find AirPods Max’s price ridiculous is because it’s already the same price as an iPhone. You just have to add a little more dollars and you can get an iPhone 11 priced at USD 599. Or if you want to save up a bit, you can choose an iPhone XR (USD 499) or an iPhone SE (USD 399). They may not be the latest model, but they’re still an iPhone. You’d even have some extra dollars to buy other accessories.

An actual laptop

Laptops are usually priced at around PHP 35,000 to PHP 50,000, but if you don’t need to use it for heavy-duty tasks like image or video editing or gaming, then you could find something that’s close to the PHP 26,000 price point of the AirPods Max. Brands like Lenovo and Acer offer these kinds of laptops. Specs might be lower, but if you don’t need them, it’ll do!

PlayStation 5

Yes, the ever-coveted gaming console that sold out immediately is actually cheaper than the AirPods Max. The price of a Playstation 5 starts at USD 399. Imagine buying headphones worth more than a gaming console.

Everyone’s been thinking it — the AirPods Max case looks like a bra. And you could buy a lot of actual bras with USD 549.

Groceries for two months

An average Filipino family could spend PHP 2,000 to 5,000 a week on groceries, maybe higher depending on where you shop. That’s why that USD 549 price tag of an AirPods Max is actually worth at the very least two months of groceries for the family.

Rent

Instead of buying a pricey headphone set, maybe you should just set aside that money to pay for your rent and other house utility bills. Just a thought.
