The Art of Detachment: The Internet’s New Self-Care Trend You Need to Know About

Nov 15, 2024   •   Kyzia Maramara

Scroll through the Internet at any given time and you’ll find yourself exposed to trends, theories, and life hacks. From the quirky Burnt Toast Theory to the practical Taxi Cab Theory, we’ve been introduced to countless concepts. One such fascinating concept that’s gained traction is the art of detachment, a practice that’s said to significantly improve our well-being. But what exactly is it?

What is the art of detachment?

Via Shiva

Folks on the Internet defines the art of detachment as cultivating a mindset that understands nothing in this world belongs to you and you have to be comfortable with that. All your experiences, relationships, and even material possessions are only there for a fleeting moment, and you’ll never know when it will end. Those who practice detachment enjoy life for what it currently offers and happily move on when it’s time to.

Now, it might sound counterintuitive to the idea that humans should enjoy life to the fullest, but detachment isn’t about isolating yourself or shutting down your emotions. It’s about finding the balance between engagement and disengagement, setting healthy boundaries without sacrificing your peace of mind. Don’t mistake it for acting cold or distant, or worse, with apathy, which is simply a lack of emotion or concern.

The art of detachment is letting go of things that don’t bring you peace. When you’ve mastered this, you conserve your emotional energy, and you get to maintain mental clarity in the long run.

So, how can you benefit from the art of detachment?

Via Robert Forever Ago

There are so many ways detachment can benefit you in life. Let’s apply it to the most obvious one — relationships.

You can’t help but hope that the person you’re currently dating could be the one. They tick all the boxes — they’re funny, they watch all your recommendations, they offer to split the bill on dates, just perfect! It’s easy to obsess over this person to the extent where you plan a wedding in your head and pick out your future kids’ names. But if you’re detached from situations you know you can’t control, you enjoy things for what they are — a great date, a thrilling conversation. And when this relationship ends up not working out, you get to look back at it with fondness.

Detachment empowers you. Life is constantly shifting and changing. Detaching yourself to a person or a possibility lets you enjoy experiences without being controlled by them. It gives you the power to step back, to exist with your emotions until they’re manageable again, until you’ve gathered enough strength to deal with it again.

It improves your relationships because when you’re not attached to people, you get to build a bond with them based on mutual respect.

Being detached lessens your stress. When you’re not worrying about all the possible outcomes of a single situation, you get to lead a more peaceful and balanced life.

Ultimately, detachment is a form of self-care. It lets you focus on what you can control.

How can it harm you?

‘the art of detachment’ has encouraged people to suppress themselves. humans are meant to experience emotion. its not about shoving pain down & forcing ourselves to ‘detach’: pain will always exist bc we’ll always feel. its about learning how to exist with it until its manageable

Of course, this goes without saying, but being totally detached isn’t a great way to live either. Some might mistake detachment as suppressing emotions and drawing a blank slate whenever you’re confronted with emotions. This wrong understanding will only mess you up.

Detachment can harm you if you mistake it for other concepts like apathy, stoicism, and nonchalance. It’s not emotional isolation which hinders you from forming genuine connection with others. It can also harm you if you avoid growth and confronting your feelings in favor of being “above” your emotions. Detachment will defeat its purpose if you use it to neglect your emotional needs. It could even lead to worse emotional burnouts.

When understood and practiced correctly, detachment is a great tool to enhance your life. But make sure you strike a balance between detachment and connection so you can lead a more fulfilling life.

The art of detachment lets you live your life to the fullest

Right now life is teaching me the law of detachment. Nothing is really yours, you gotta be comfortable with not being attached, just enjoying life for what it is & moving on when it’s time.

For folks out there who overthink too much and have the urge to control the outcomes of every situation, unclench your fists for a moment. Take deep breaths and practice the art of detachment. Once you look at things for what it is and enjoy what the present offers, you’ll find that’s when you get to live your life to the fullest.
