Even when turned off, home appliances and gadgets like televisions, microwaves and laptops still use up electricity in the form of those little light bulbs that are lit. The electricity usage may be small, but it will still make a dent on your wallet and a big one on energy consumption.
Air conditioning is nothing less than a blessing in tropical countries like the Philippines. If the heat is too much, turn up the A/C and you’ll find yourself almost instantly relieved. But cooling your home has its downside, because air conditioning actually helps in heating up the earth. Lowering the temperature of your AC by two degrees can already keep 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from getting to the atmosphere.
There’s nothing like a hot shower to get you relaxed and prepped for your day. That said, it’s still an indulgence that affects the environment.
You can buy low-flow showerheads that can help you save hot water and lessen about 350 pounds from carbon dioxide production in a year. If that investment doesn’t look appealing, you can simply turn off the water while you’re soaping and shampooing to conserve water and energy. Dishwashers also have an energy-saving setting that will manage how much power it consumes, therefore conserving some of your moolah and helping Momma Nature.
In America alone, 40% of the food that people don’t eat in a year go straight to land fills where it’s left to transform into a dangerous greenhouse gas called methane. Although methane doesn’t stay long in the atmosphere, it absorbs heat more effectively than carbon dioxide. This makes methane an important contributor to global warming, and you wouldn’t want your picky stomach to be the cause of this. Finish your food and waste less.
