Barbie is one of the iconic figures in pop culture. Its massive popularity paved the way for movies, TV shows, and clothes, defining the childhoods of countless children on a global scale. More than six decades after the first-ever Barbie doll was launched, there are now over 100 Barbie dolls with nine body types, 35 skin tones, and 94 hairstyles. And now, Barbie has made history once again with a new doll. Take a look!
American multinational toy manufacturing company Mattel marked a new milestone after it unveiled its latest Barbie doll, one that represents individuals with Down syndrome. They teamed up with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to ensure that everything about this Barbie doll is accurate, from its features, shape, clothing, to its accessories.
“This Barbie serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate the power of representation. It is a huge step forward for inclusion and a moment that we are celebrating,” said NDSS president and CEO Kandi Pickard.
The doll was modeled by Ellie Goldstein, a model who also has Down syndrome. In an Instagram post, she revealed that she felt emotional and proud after seeing the Barbie doll for the first time.
“Diversity is important as people need to see more people like me out there in the world and not be hidden away, Barbie will help make this happen,” said Goldstein.
This Barbie doll comes with a new face and body sculpt, having a shorter frame and a longer torso to be more evincive of a person with Down syndrome. In fact, you can see a single line on the palm of the doll, which is a characteristic often associated with this condition.
The attention to detail on the doll’s outfit also deserves praise! The puff-sleeved dress design was embellished with butterflies and yellow and blue shades, also known as symbols and colors associated with Down syndrome awareness. And to top it off, the doll is wearing pink ankle foot orthotics (AFOs). These external biomechanical devices are used by some people with Down syndrome to stabilize their ankles and feet.
Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel Lisa McKnight, expressed her delight at the partnership, saying:
“Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in Barbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who do not look like themselves. Doll play outside of a child’s own lived experience can teach understanding and build a greater sense of empathy, leading to a more accepting world.”
Mattel is among the companies that have recently made strides to foster diversity and inclusivity. In 2020, they released Barbie dolls in a wheelchair, with prosthetic limbs or vitiligo, as part of the Barbie Fashionistas line. They also created Barbie dolls representing various careers, such as gymnastics coach, firefighter, dog trainer, and art teacher.
And how can we forget their eco-conscious line that features Barbie dolls made of recycled plastics? Mattel continues to push the boundaries and seek ways to eliminate the stigma of physical disabilities by releasing fun yet interactive dolls on the market.
Many were thrilled after seeing the newest Barbie doll, especially those who have relatives that has Down syndrome. Take a look at what some netizens have to say:

Indeed, a win!
I am happy with the news that there is now a Barbie doll representing a person with Down syndrome.
Let’s remember how positive was the inclusion of character Becky Jackson (played by Lauren Potter) in TV series „Glee”.
