Even the strongest storms couldn’t wash away the Filipino spirit. When Typhoons Tino and Uwan battered the Philippines a few days apart, they left behind more than flooded streets and uprooted homes. They left countless stories of compassion and community, stories we are blessed to hear even as we scroll through the destruction on our timelines. These two powerful storms ravaged towns from Luzon to Visayas, forcing thousands to flee their homes and leaving many without power or shelter. Yet amid the devastation, the Filipino spirit of bayanihan — the unshakable drive to help one another — shone through in small but meaningful ways.
In a truly heartwarming act of bayanihan, some restaurants opened their doors for hungry Filipinos who needed a warm meal. Mama Lou’s served free bowls of their Zuppa di Maccheroni. Buffet restaurant Guevarra’s by Chef Laudico gave out Chicken Arroz Caldo to anyone who came by. Even TABLO Kitchen x Café offered cups of hot tea. Uwan might’ve brought howling winds and torrential rain, but Filipinos brought warmth and comfort.
Car owners have extra stress during typhoons. Not only do they have to think about their houses, but they also have to secure their cars. It’s a good thing that malls like Greenhills, Estancia, Tiendesitas, and select SM Supermalls in the city offered free overnight parking. A small gesture that went a long way for many who needed peace of mind.
In the digital age, we rely heavily on Wi-Fi and data services to connect to the internet, not much on regular phone load. But when power lines go out and your phone is about to die, you’ll realize a regular phone load is your only way to ask for help and contact your loved ones. During Super Typhoon Uwan, many Pinoys offered to help those in need by giving them emergency load for calling and texting.
Humans aren’t the only ones affected by natural disasters—pets suffer too. Many animals are left vulnerable when owners are forced to evacuate. Thankfully, LGUs stepped in. Quezon City and Marikina City both opened pet-friendly evacuation shelters, ensuring that even our furry family members were cared for and protected.

A video that went viral from Dingalan, Aurora—one of the hardest-hit areas—showed fishermen working together to lift boats overturned by powerful waves. It was a compelling image of unity, a display of a community determined to preserve their livelihoods and rebuild together.
In Cebu, 15-year-old Jayboy Magdadaro became a hero. Using only a salbabida and a small boat, he rescued over 50 people in Sitio San Roque, Jubay—children, pregnant women, and elderly residents trapped by rising floodwaters. His courage reminded everyone that bayanihan knows no age, only heart.
Because our expectations are low, and the bar is even lower, it’s always a pleasant surprise when government officials perform their duties even at the cost of their safety. While many sought shelter, some local leaders stayed out on the ground to ensure everyone’s safety. Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo was seen personally helping with evacuation and clearing operations. In Cebu, Borbon Mayor Nico Dotillos also earned praise for assisting with rescue and cleanup efforts.
Typhoons Tino and Uwan tested the strength of countless communities. But as always, bayanihan prevailed. From mall owners to students, from city officials to anonymous strangers online, everyone found a way to help. Because no matter how fierce the winds or how high the floods, Filipinos always rise together.
