With everyone focused politics and the Iron Throne, much of the tension stems from wondering “when they hell are they going to wise up to the fact that there’s an army of the undead led by a powerful magical being marching on them?”
The Night King has the power to raise the dead, by the way, which means that the longer the battle, the stronger his numbers. Their only saving graces come in the form of either dragon fire, dragon glass (aka obsidian), or Valyrian steel—very little of which still exist.
But that chick with the white hair has dragons, you say? Well, she’s finally making her way across the Narrow Sea, which means things are about to get a hell of a lot more interesting from here on out.
Hopefully you aren’t overloaded with too much information at this point!
As of season six, episode nine, the Starks have finally regained Winterfell, the Greyjoys have struck a deal with Dany to transport her to Westeros with their ships in exchange for the Iron Isles, Cersei faces trial for her incestuous ways and murderous plots, and everyone else is still playing the Game of Thrones.

Reading is good for you, but no, you don’t need to read the books because the show is already well past them. That is how long fans have been waiting for the last installment of the series.
Frustration at how long it takes GRRM to write aside, the books might help clear a few details up, but the show has taken a number of liberties, so don’t count on them being the same.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. So the answer is yes, you definitely should. At the very least it makes for an entertaining watch, and once you get your bearings it becomes addictive very quickly.
Valar morghulis! And do try to stay hydrated—you’ll need it for all the tears you’re about to shed.
