Bright, popping colors and a storyline far from your typical Hollywood fare, The Book of Life is a modern take on the tale of Orpheus but with more supernatural forces, well-timed comedy and great music involved.
Did you really only expect one Miyazaki mention on this list? Howl’s Moving Castle might be older than most of the films in this list, but it’s an often-ignored feature in his repertoire. This is a must-see if only for a story that subverts the usual damsel-in-distress and gives you heroes in the most unexpected forms. Great bits of fantasy are mixed in with an epic adventure that keeps you on your edge of your seat the whole time–an experience you should share with the whole family.
While the concept of sentient robots may not be novel to your child given the generation they were born in, there’s still a lot of great stuff for them in 9. From having a favorite character, booing your favorite villain, and a few surprises and scares here and there, 9 is a post-apocalyptic thrillride that doesn’t baby its audience nor hold back any punches, a great exercise in easing your child to films with more mature themes.
You have, by this age, undoubtedly introduced your child to a number of other films and stories that are necessary to their personal growth. This is, therefore, the perfect age to watch The LEGO Movie–if not for the laughs then for the exercise in recognizing all the homages and references it makes. Sure, you might have steered away from it because it looked corny, but sit through the trailer and you’ll be a believer.
Have fun at the movies!
