8 Cringe and Facepalm-Worthy Moments From Philippine Teleseryes

Jul 15, 2022   •   Kyzia Maramara

Local TV, what a joy to watch. While we’re already familiar with teleserye cliches and tropes, sometimes these shows spring surprises on us viewers. You’ll be hit with “incredible” CGI, “epic” fight scenes, and passionate acting that sometimes results in, well, facepalm moments. Don’t get us wrong, we’re fans of teleseryes (sometimes it’s the budget and time constraints that lead to these problems) but that won’t stop us from listing Pinoy teleserye scenes that made us LOL.

This shocking transformation

Fair warning: Nothing will prepare for what you’re about to witness. This is a clip from GMA Network’s series for kids, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, specifically the “Legend of the Firefly” episode. So, yes, that’s a firefly, not a butterfly. But the target audience is no excuse for the low-budget laughable CGI. To be fair, the other episodes did have decent graphics. We’re just not sure what happened with this one.

The snake

“Budget for CGI: 12 pesos,” one netizen commented under that TikTok video which is once again a clip from Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko. We can’t even begin to explain everything wrong with this CGI snake — from the way it hovers around the tree to the superimposed human face and the way it speaks! It’s giving Snapchat filter. We only hope Valentina’s snakes for the upcoming Darna series aren’t anything like this.

CPR that could kill

Here’s Kambal Karibal iconic cpr scene with Jennie’s DDDD rap pic.twitter.com/IZYNfPi7Bl

This scene aired in 2018 is one of those teleserye fails that will never get old. It’s simply hilarious. The scene showed a nurse trying to revive Carmina Villaroel’s character with her CPR skills (read: rising her shoulders up and down). In 2021 it even went viral in Thailand where one user said it was the result of learning CPR online. If international shows can do realistic CPR scenes, why can’t we?

Another medical scene fail

In this episode of the teleserye Karelasyon, Greg (Pen Medina) is in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was intubated but surprise, surprise, the tube wasn’t connected to anything. Doctors and nurses are cringing hard right now.

Dyesebel’s amazing underwater world

To be fair, this was shot and edited in 2014. If teleserye CGI is hilarious today, what more then? Anne Curtis did a fine job exhibiting Dyesebel’s vocal powers here but the characters swimming and fighting each other in front of a green screen is too painful to watch.

Ika-6 na Utos plastic gun scene

Ah, another iconic scene. Georgia (Ryza Cenon) and Emma (Sunshine Dizon) are pregnant women fighting over a stroller at a mall. When Georgia grabs a plastic gun and threatens her archnemesis with it, Emma acted as if it could literally end her life. What’s the worst it could do? Get your clothes wet? If you can’t get enough of this pair, watch their viral gym-off where Georgia loosely strangled Emma with a jump rope and she gagged as if she was an inch from death.

The cutest K-9

At this point, we’re not sure if the showrunners didn’t research or they booked a K-9 unit but it failed to come to set. This adorable Shih Tzu is surely a last-minute substitute, right? Tiny dogs like these could be trained to be sniffer dogs (Thailand and Russia police forces have even employed floofy corgis for their sniffing powers) but the Shih Tzu just looked like it was lost inside that van.

So many questions about this car crash

This scene from Inday Will Always Love You evokes too many questions. If the driver wasn’t the one being strangled, why couldn’t he just stop the car? How did the car fall from the bridge when there was a concrete barrier? If the car fell upside down, why was it shown right side up when they were drowning inside? Why was Barbie Forteza wearing scuba gear in 1:27? The car they were driving looked new but the car that they drowned in had a lot of chipped paint. Why was that? We’ll leave you to it.
