Cinemas in Metro Manila are finally allowed to operate after being closed for a year and seven months. Hear that? That’s the excited cheer of cinephiles, couples, and barkadas all waiting for this day to come. And for good reason — cinemas opening mean another step toward (new) normalcy or at least to being able to watch the latest Marvel blockbuster on the big screen. So what do you need to know to gear up for your trip to the theaters? Which cinemas in Metro Manila will be reopening come November?
For starters, only those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed inside theaters. The total capacity is also limited to 30% under Alert Level 3. Aside from this, the Inter-Agency Task Force along with The Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP) has laid down ground rules for moviegoers. These protocols are called “Sa Sine Safe Ka.” For moviegoers, it means body temperature checks before entering the cinema, vaccination card for two complete doses, and face masks and face shields.
Unfortunately, while we get our theater privileges back, we don’t get it back in full. Eating is not allowed inside anymore so you’ll have to watch these blockbusters snack-free. Bummer but it’s a small sacrifice to pay, right?
In addition to accommodating only fully vaccinated moviegoers, theaters are also primed with the strictest sanitary measures. CEAP requires them to implement the following:
Rockwell Cinemas are welcoming fully-vaccinated people in their theater at 40% capacity. Guests are required to accomplish health declaration forms before purchasing tickets online. They will also be required to scan HealthBadge, Rockwell’s single-QR contact tracing platform before entering the theter. For November, titles on their big screen include Dune, Eternals, and Shang-Chi and the Legend Of the Ten Rings.

Megaworld Cinemas will be using “modified ventilation and air-conditioning systems equipped with Merv 13 air filters” to ensure proper air circulation inside the theater. The theaters will be sanitized with UV technology in between screenings. The cinema will implement contactless ticket purchasing as well as a 30% seating capacity for fully vaccinated individuals.
