In time, both plaque and tartar can cause inflammation of the gums. This is called periodontal disease (PD).

Dr. Saza enumerated the risks associated with PD, including how it’s linked to the inflammation of the kidney and heart tissue and how its bacteria are able to also spread to the heart and lungs, where it can create more problems. Lastly, geriatric dogs with severe PD suffer more from cardiac diseases compared to geriatric dogs without PD.
