The strong winds and heavy downpours of Typhoon Carina have left countless families losing their homes and belongings. Many organizations have started donation drives to help typhoon victims get back on their feet, and if you want to help, here are a few reminders to keep in mind.
Sadly, some people use disasters to organize fake donation drives. If a so-called charity has little to no information and even insists you send your donations via suspicious links, they’re likely a fraud. Don’t engage and report them right away.
Most charity organizations provide a list of items needed to aid typhoon victims. This could include basic essentials like food, blankets, hygiene products, and medical supplies. As much as you want to add your personal touch, it’s still best to follow these instructions because the last thing you want is for your donations to be deemed unfit for their intended recipients.
New or mint-condition items are easier to sort and distribute without further cleaning or repairs.
If you’re unsure what to donate, it’s best to send cash. Monetary donations let relief organizations purchase exactly what is needed, when it’s needed, and where it’s needed. Don’t stress yourself out about how much you should donate, either. Big or small, every peso you give can help save lives.
While donating undergarments is okay, we’re drawing a line when it comes to used innerwear. Used undergarments can pose health risks and are considered unsanitary. Any donated undergarments should be new and sealed.
Fresh produce like vegetables, fruits, and meat spoil quickly. They require refrigeration, which may not be immediately available in devastated areas. Instead, you can donate medicines, canned goods, and bottled water for quicker distribution efforts. And remember: always check the expiration date.
Typhoon victims need ready-to-use items more than pre-loved appliances, shelves, and any furniture that comes in parts. Volunteers don’t have much time to fix or assemble these items when more people out there still need assistance.
This is important, especially if you want to give donations in bulk. Heavy rains and flooded roads make it hard to deliver items without getting stuck. Coordinate with the concerned organization so your donations will arrive intact.
