Some trends turn into classics, while others are just ridiculously good — leaving you wondering where on earth they came from! Case in point: little yellow ducks adorning people’s heads recently. But the million-peso question remains: how did this duck hairband trend all start? This Pinoy Reddit discussion might help give the answers we’re looking for.

If you’re seeing a bunch of people donning adorable little ducks perched atop their heads and are confused AF — don’t worry — you’re not alone. That’s why we’re here to figure it out.
If you’re scratching your head over where this duck mania originated, honestly, same. But this trend didn’t just pop out of thin air. There’s gotta be some story behind it, right?
The trend may have originated in East Asian countries. In 2015, China had a fad where people wore sprouts on their heads. But in the Philippines, the duck trend seemed to really take off in Baguio during the Christmas 2023 season.

“I think Baguio yung start talaga nito lalo noong pasko. Mga kabataan nagsimula tapos somehow kumalat sa mga turista. Nandiyan yung sprout tapos yung bibe na yung sumunod. May nakita nga ako may propeller sa ulo,” one Redditor wrote.
Others, however, explain it all began with SB19’s Ken, whose fans affectionately call themselves chickens, Ken’s favorite food.

“Nauso sa mga SB19 fans yan na mga bias si Ken. Chicken = Ken, tsaka favorite food niya ata chicken. Usual yan pag may shows ang SB19 or si Ken/Felip. And yes, nag-perform si Ken nung Chinese Year, kaya sobrang daming sisiw diyan. Yung iba naki bandwagon na lang,” another user commented.
No matter its origin, everyone can all agree that it’s just cute, silly, and all in good fun! What’s not to like?

You can always count on Pinoys to make something quirky a unique fashion staple. All the rubber duckies we see on people’s heads bring us back to when the adorable furry, brown monster Domo-kun (the official mascot of Japan’s public broadcaster NHK) had Pinoys in a chokehold. You can see it on every merch, from bags and shirts to tumblers.

“Reminds me of the Domo-kun era,” one comment reads.
Conversely, others think the rubber ducks fad is the new lato lato craze, minus the piercing noise it makes. Remember how some people almost went berserk to do some lato lato tricks?

“Ang bagong trend after ng lato lato — I guess at least hindi maingay tong isang ‘to.”
While we’re at it, this may be the perfect time to bring back this iconic nursery rhyme that perfectly fits this yellow craze.
