Why We’re Better Off Without the U.N.

Again, other than arbitration in our favor under the UNCLOS, putting us together with our American and Japanese allies to fend off China both diplomatically and potentially otherwise, demonstrating an ability to help out and enforce peacekeeping endeavors since the 1940s, espousing and protecting our most basic human rights and thus at least enlightening us to not just accept abuse from the worst despots from within and without, and assuring us of political asylum if the worst were to happen to us, what has the U.N. really ever done?
We’ve seen how being isolated from the rest of the world works out. North Korea is awesome, you guys! They’re totally independent, and they don’t answer to anyone, least of all the United Nations.
So NoKor is starving, they need help, and they have to deal with anything, anything at all, they’re left on their own because they don’t have representation. Clearly, we can be the next North Korea. Who needs representation? We don’t need a place at the table and have our needs be heard. Let China take everything it wants, let our allies turn a deaf ear to our calls for help, and let the world treat us as pariah because they’re all just a bunch of haters! #HatersGonnaHate
And, once again, other than arbitration in our favor under the UNCLOS, putting us together with our American and Japanese allies to fend off China both diplomatically and potentially otherwise, demonstrating an ability to help out and enforce peacekeeping endeavors since the 1940s, espousing and protecting our most basic human rights and thus at least enlightening us to not just accept abuse from the worst despots from within and without, assuring us of political asylum if the worst were to happen to us, and granting us a voice in the international conversation we apparently cannot extricate ourselves from, what has the U.N. really ever done?
Well, economically, with our peace and order situation improving by leaps and bounds, why would we ever need the U.N. to help us out with anything—except for the fact that they allow us to have trade relations with other countries that do not put us at a blatant disadvantage? After all, if we export and get exorbitant tariffs from the country we are exporting to, while they insist on exporting to us at no tariff unless we want to put up with a drastic supply shortage, pray tell, why would we want the U.N. to step in and help us out? We should leave ourselves at the mercy of other countries and how they wish to trade with us, right? Or not.
Does this sound familiar? Other than arbitration in our favor under the UNCLOS, putting us together with our American and Japanese allies to fend off China both diplomatically and potentially otherwise, demonstrating an ability to help out and enforce peacekeeping endeavors since the 1940s, espousing and protecting our most basic human rights and thus at least enlightening us to not just accept abuse from the worst despots from within and without, assuring us of political asylum if the worst were to happen to us, granting us a voice in the international conversation we apparently cannot extricate ourselves from, and ensuring fair trade with other countries instead of an arbitrary free-for-all, what has the U.N. really ever done?
With the World Health Organization under the United Nations, vaccines have been made free for us, being a developing country. Why would we ever want to deal with measles, polio, and smallpox? Why should we care? Surely, we could just make everyone pay for these vaccines, even if the vast majority of us live below the poverty line. We can totally afford all that, right?
Fine, then! So other than arbitration in our favor under the UNCLOS, putting us together with our American and Japanese allies to fend off China both diplomatically and potentially otherwise, demonstrating an ability to help out and enforce peacekeeping endeavors since the 1940s, espousing and protecting our most basic human rights and thus at least enlightening us to not just accept abuse from the worst despots from within and without, assuring us of political asylum if the worst were to happen to us, granting us a voice in the international conversation we apparently cannot extricate ourselves from, ensuring fair trade with other countries instead of an arbitrary free-for-all, and giving us free vaccines and thereby nearly eradicating some of the deadliest diseases that have ever afflicted us as a nation, what has the UN really ever done?
Errr… $301 Million in aid during Yolanda? Appealing to the international community, resulting in $70 Million in aid during Ondoy? $46.8 Million for Bohol after the 2013 earthquake? Who cares?! We don’t need any of that, right? Baka ibulsa pa yan ng kung sino lang. Pffft.
In the end, it’s pretty clear: other than arbitration in our favor under the UNCLOS, putting us together with our American and Japanese allies to fend off China both diplomatically and potentially otherwise, demonstrating an ability to help out and enforce peacekeeping endeavors since the 1940s, espousing and protecting our most basic human rights and thus at least enlightening us to not just accept abuse from the worst despots from within and without, assuring us of political asylum if the worst were to happen to us, granting us a voice in the international conversation we apparently cannot extricate ourselves from, ensuring fair trade with other countries instead of an arbitrary free-for-all, giving us free vaccines and thereby nearly eradicating some of the deadliest diseases that have ever afflicted us as a nation, and hundreds of millions of dollars in aid within the last seven years alone, we can safely say that the United Nations has done absolutely nothing for us.
