The 2000s was a treasure trove of original Filipino fantasy shows, with both major networks coming up with their original storylines filled with rich worldbuilding and captivating characters. Here are some of the ones we miss the most — and each of them is free to watch (or rewatch, in most cases!) on the internet!

Super Twins

Starring Jennylyn Mercado and Nadine Samonte, this series follows twin teenage girls who have accidentally been bestowed with the sun’s enormous power after their mother comes across a magical metallic stone from the stars. Their father turns the metallic stone into a pair of rings, gifted to the twins Sha-Sha and Tin-tin, who are then able to transform into superheroes Super S and Super T. That chant the twins do to signal their transformation is something everyone can recite by heart! “Kapangyarihan ng araw, taglay ay liwanag. Mulawin

One of the first telefantasyas that built a loyal following, this show tells the story of a race of half-human, half-eagles called “Mulawins”, who once lived peacefully together with humans. However, after the human population grew, the Mulawins were forced to seek refuge in the mountains, essentially being kicked out. As tension and conflict become intense within the tribe, a faction that called themselves the Ravenas decided to terrorize humans to reclaim their land, while the Mulawins try to defend the humans and unite the two races once more. The love team of Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez drew in droves of fans, but it’s really the amazing world-building of the story of these bird-humans that made viewers stay. Encantadia

Encantadia is one of the most successful and memorable fantasy shows of the Philippines — so much so that it got a sequel just a year later and a remake over a decade after it was first released! Set in the mythical world of Encantadia, the story follows four sister princesses called Sangg’res who are tasked with guarding four precious gems that represent four kingdoms in the realm. The four gems must be kept away from each other to keep the peace, but after one of the kingdoms attempt to steal all the gems, a war between the kingdoms and the sisters begins. The all-star cast was definitely a draw, but the rich and original world-building, captivating storylines, and detailed costumes and sets kept us all tuned. Majika

Here’s another hit series starring Angel Locsin, where she plays Sabina, a seemingly ordinary girl who finds out that she’s destined to become Saladin’s most powerful female magician or Salamangka. At a young age, she becomes separated from her parents and siblings, forcing her to live an ordinary life in the mortal world. Still, destiny calls, and she finds her way back into the world of Saladin, where she meets and becomes an apprentice to Argo, played by Dennis Trillo. Super Inggo

Little Budong has always dreamt of becoming a superhero. But the 10-year-old soon finds out that he actually possesses superhuman powers that he inherited from his parents, a hero father, and a villain mother. Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko

A boy who leads a seemingly simple life, Pedro finds himself thrust into a magical world of superstitions and myths after his father goes missing. With the assistance of his little friends, Pedro embarks on a quest to find his father and defeat the scariest creatures in Philippine mythology, improving his self-confidence and learning more about the mystic world that surrounds him. Spirits

In 1993, a mysterious supernatural epidemic spread across a small town, but the illness only affected children. While all children are in the hospital, a pregnant woman unknowingly gives birth to an alien, which released a powerful surge that killed nearly all the children in the town. Ang Panday

Adapted from the Carlo J. Caparas character of the same name and popularized by the 1980 Fernando Poe Jr. film, this series tells the story of a small-town blacksmith, who suddenly becomes a vigilante hero after he forges a mystical dagger from a meteor that crashed near his town. Viewers loved the chemistry between the two lead stars Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista, and though the two are no longer together in real life, their on-screen romance is still kilig-worthy!
