When you open Youtube and look at the trending videos, you’d probably see that there’s at least one GG Vibes video at the top — maybe it’s even filled with it. GG Vibes is an online gig show by Gigi de Lana and her bandmates, collectively known as the Gigi Vibes band. Their show skyrocketed to fame and virality when people on the internet couldn’t stop talking about their cover of Roselle Nava’s “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita.” Here’s why you should start tuning in to the GG Vibes show, too:
When she covered “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita?”, she wasn’t actually all that prepared. It was a prank basically and she didn’t get to rehearse the song at all. And what made it all the more challenging is that the band kept on changing keys, raising it up and up and up until she actually had to laugh. But you know what? She still absolutely slayed it. Hence, virality.
Gigi de Lana was a contestant on It’s Showtime’s Tawag ng Tanghalan segment in 2016. But you might have known her then by her full name: Mary Gidget Dela Llana.
Guess who discovered her? None other than Tita Charo! No seriously, it’s Charo Santos who scouted her after seeing Gigi’s cover of The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun.”
She cited Celine Dion and Regine Velasquez as some of the singers she listened to while growing up. Gigi also shared that she dreamt of sharing a stage with her idols, including Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, and Kyla. And what do you know? She recently got to perform with Regine on ASAP Natin ‘To!
“Sa totoo lang, hindi ko ini-expect na mangyayari ‘to. Ang gusto ko lang naman, kumanta, kasi first love ko is singing . . . Sobra akong overwhelmed,” she told ABS-CBN.
Gigi mentioned how she would love to collaborate with rapper Gloc-9, also one of her idols. Gusto kong mag-venture sa iba pang genres. Actually depende rin siya sa projects and siyempre yung future compositions ko at saka ng banda ko,” she said.
And she got her first stint in Four Sisters and a Wedding. Gigi played Love Mae Tete, a.k.a. CJ’s high school love interest. She actually auditioned for the role!
Despite being the face and name of the online show, Gigi knows she got to this point in her life with the help of all the people around her, including her bandmates and the studio. And it helps that all the band members are actually friends in real life, as they shared in an interview with Rappler.
“Nakakatuwa, nakakaiyak, kasi nandito na, ‘yung pinaghirapan, ‘yung tiyaga,” she said to ABS-CBN.
Their online sessions are perfect substitutes for the lack of in-person gigs that you might be missing so sooo bad after more than a year in lockdown. GG Vibes usually streams on late nights on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but you can always go to their Youtube channel and enjoy their past performances.
