A lot of things happened in the tumultuous but at the same time healing year that is 2021. We rode the waves of trend after trend, binge-watched the same shows, turned into Maritesses to follow the lives of personalities, and did so much more. All this while surviving yet another year of living with the pandemic. Now that a new year is finally upon us, it’s time to look back at the past 12 months and have a little #throwback. Google Philippines just announced several local lists that topped Filipinos’ search queries in 2021. Check them out below:
In the second year of the pandemic, “COVID-19 prevention” topped the list of trending searches in 2021 proving that Pinoys continue to rely on Google Search for helpful information on how to stay safe. “VaxCertPH” is also included in the overall top trending search and “COVID-19 vaccine” in the most searched news of 2021. These are a good indication of Filipinos’ view towards vaccination and its importance not just for health and safety but as a requirement to travel locally and internationally.
Other top trending and news searches include “Miss Universe 2021,” “Paralympics,” “Olympic Games Tokyo 2020,” and “national ID registration.”
Are we surprised? South Korean series Squid Game smashed records left and right when it was released last September. After 28 days of streaming, it recorded 1.65 billion hours of viewing in 145 million households. The staggering number is almost twice that of Bridgerton Season 1 which had 625 million hours on the first 28 days. Squid Game soared to become Netflix Original’s Number 1 show (and the Number 1 Halloween costume globally based on our timelines). The show is about 456 cash-strapped players competing in deadly childhood games to win the ultimate prize — KRW 45.6 billion (roughly PHP 1.9-B).
Aside from Squid Game, also on Google’s list are True Beauty, Nevertheless, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Bridgerton, Trese, and Alice in Borderland.
While Jake Gyllenhaal did star in a movie this year, we all know his work in The Guilty isn’t what boosted him on Google’s list. It involves a certain American pop star and her fandom. When Taylor Swift released Red (Taylor’s Version), the singer included a 10-minute version of the popular nearly decade-old heartbreak song, “All Too Well” coupled with a short film. Fans have long speculated the song to be about her ex Gyllenhaal, whom she dated in 2011. Of course, the internet had a field day. Especially when Swift added lines of scathing lyrics that somehow seem to point to her ex.
Also on the list is Kim Seon-ho, Hwang In-youp, Gerald Anderson, Dylan O’Brien, Dominique Roque, and Scottie Thompson.
Yen Santos’ name was caught in controversy this year after speculations that she was a factor in the Paolo Contis and LJ Reyes split. Even though Contis attempted to clear Santos’ name, clips of them roaming around in Baguio can’t deter netizens from assuming the worst. It even gave birth to a national inside joke — “Baguio as a friend.”
Aside from Santos, other most searched female personalities include Rabiya Mateo, AJ Raval, Hidilyn Diaz, Leni Robredo, and more.
It’s been a huge year for Kim Seon-ho. After he captured everyone’s hearts as the second male lead in the 2020 K-drama Start-Up, fans have been clamoring for more. Finally, he was cast as the main lead in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, everyone’s favorite healing K-drama this 2021. But hours after the final episode was aired, Seon-ho’s rep turned upside down after his ex-girlfriend anonymously accused him of forcing her to get an abortion and threatening her. While brands pulled out and shows removed him, his online fanbase only got stronger. Eventually, the issue was cleared after a news outlet published a report that proved Seon-ho actually took responsibility for the matter. We’re just glad he survived cancel culture!
Squid Game takes the crown once again for this category. It’s not surprising since the show is already the most searched series for 2021. Aside from Squid Game, other Korean series that made it on the list are True Beauty, Vincenzo, Nevertheless, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Mr. Queen, and My Roommate Is a Gumiho.
Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon topped Google’s list of most-searched movies this year. It managed to topple Army of the Dead and even Netflix’s Red Notice, Netflix’s most-watched film of all time. Raya and the Last Dragon takes its viewers to the fantasy world of Kumandra where humans and dragons used to live in harmony. But when Druun monsters threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save the humans. Thousands of years later, humans are about to face the same fate and it’s up to Raya to search for the last dragon to save them.
Marvel Studio’s Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Rurouni Kenshin, and Disney’s Cruella are also on the list.
Axie Infinity soared to the top this year with thousands of Filipinos checking out an app that lets you earn while playing games. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it isn’t. Axie Infinity is an NFT-based online video game that lets the player earn cryptocurrency as they win the game by completing activities and defeating creatures. Still confused? Among Us, Genshin Impact, Valorant, Dragonary, and CryptoBlades are some of the other game-related searches included in the list.
