Trends come and go, and there are so many that you’ll go loco once you actively try to even keep up with all of them. But there are a few that are either so bizarre or so impactful that they just stick — if not in the real world, then at least in our memories. From music that will make you dance to smarter lifestyle choices, here are this year’s trends we’ll forever associate with the year that was 2024:

Pinoys have always had a knack for anything cute and random, just like the bibe-fication in the year’s first quarter. It all started around Christmas 2023 in Baguio, where you’ll find unique trinkets, from strawberries to hilarious phallic keychains. Sprout clips are cute but you know what’s cuter? Adorable ducks.

Celebrity dupe! We can remain delulu and believe we’ll snag our celebrity crushie but we all know that the chances of that happening IRL are thin. At least we’ve got lookalikes we can *try* to pursue. It all started with the Timothee Chalamet look-alike competition in New York, which was made more hilarious when he showed up. More were held in different states, like the Jungkook look-alike competition in Chicago and the Glen Powell look-alike contest in Texas. Are the Americans yearning for Kalokalike?
Have you started with your running era yet? Running has always been a good exercise, but we can’t deny that more got into it this year, especially among the 20-somethings looking for more things to do outside of work. People even joke that it’s the new avenue for dating, too – ditch the usual apps and go for a run instead. Perhaps the accessibility of more car-free weekend locations around the metro contributes to this trend, too, which we’re obsessed about. Let the people enjoy the outdoors!
We’re no strangers to handheld fans because we just can’t survive in this heat, but the birth of Jisu Life is the final boss we’re all obsessed with. Sure, it costs an arm and a leg, and it sounds like an airplane that’s about to take off, but we’re all willing to compromise for the instant relief and comfort it brings when we’re out and about. In this house, we don’t believe in hulas.

What was once the background music to neon lights-adorned jeepneys, tricycles, and buses has gone global, and we’re all for it. Pinoys keep dancing the worm-like moves while foreigners are doing their fit checks and poses inspired by Roblox. With the upcoming holidays, we’re sure Budots will be a part of every family reunion and year-ender playlist this year. Dazurv!
Summer 2024 became the season where neon green became cool, all thanks to Charli XCX. Her album Brat didn’t just give us club music with legendary collaborations, but it became a cultural phenomenon, which grew past the album promotions. Everyone welcomed brat with glee: from viral TikTok dances to brands embracing the ~brat aesthetic~, giving a nod to the messy, chronically online club girlie. Maybe it’ll be one of this generation’s most memorable summers ever.

There are two types of people: a.) those who are expressive and b.) those who show no emotion at all. In other words, we have the OA (overreacting) and the nonchalant types. The duo works every time, just like yin and yang, black and white, north and south poles of magnets, and everything in between. It’s one of TikTok’s many trends, and we love seeing this label’s interpretations. After all, we love categorizing and putting labels on ourselves. So, are you the OA or a nonchalant member of your friend group?
Anik-aniks have always been in Pinoy culture: how our mothers collect Tupperware and shopping bags, how your jet setter friend keeps their tickets and boarding passes, or how you started growing a collection of blind boxes. But this year came a new wave of anik-anik, especially the trinkets that everyone loves to put on their bags and other belongings as a form of self-expression. From the plushies to keychains whose sounds you can hear from miles away, we support it! As others would say, it’s their version of healing their inner child.
While there’s much debate surrounding this topic, whichever type of anik-anik you want – at the end of the day, here’s what’s most important: let people enjoy things, as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.
