If you really want to maintain the relationships that matter, make them feel that they do matter. Try to be a more active presence in their life. Stay in touch with them. Make them feel valued! Cherish the people who are important to you, and make them feel that way.
As a teen, dating was all about moving fast, mind games, sex, and the right now. You, as an adult, have no time for games. You prioritize intimacy, savoring the moment and planning for the future. As an adult, you want something real, something for the long haul. You don’t want Netflix and chill, you want Torrent and commitment. The challenge is looking for someone with the same priorities. Stop dating like a kid and start dating for a future. Don’t let your past define you because you’re not going there, you’re going forward. Be honest going into the relationship and don’t be pressured.
Don’t be so uptight and high-strung. More importantly, put yourself out there and try to have fun.
However, never, EVER have sex with your ex. Enough said. Unless, of course, you want to hate yourself.
At the end of the day, it’s you who can make yourself be a better person. Relationships matter more as an adult. So get out there. Give more and expect less. Say please and thank you. Start loving more. You’ll live longer!
