How Journaling Helped Me Prep for Adulting

Mar 27, 2024   •   Chariza Crudo

Your last years as a teen can be exhilarating and terrifying at the same time, especially if you went through them during the pandemic. Add the turbulent years of living through the early stages of adulting, and you’ve got yourself one confused human being. Here’s a tip: Having a hobby might be the key to help anchor you through it all. One activity I can totally vouch for is journaling!

As someone who spent her late teens writing journals and discovering how it helped me get to know myself better, here are some of its undeniable benefits

Going through huge transitions in life means making lots of life-changing decisions. And for a teenager, this could be overwhelming. Writing down your thoughts in a journal can help you sort it out. Seeing it all laid out could make you realize something you’ve never considered.

They say being communicative about your emotions is healthy, but sometimes dumping our feelings on others can be difficult and (mentally) draining. Gladly, your notebook does not have feelings, nor can it talk back, so write away!

Journaling hones your creativity and writing

Those couple of stagnant years stuck at home because of the pandemic may have had a negative effect on our well-being. This is why keeping our brains active is crucial for improving our mental health. By keeping a journal, you’re helping your mind exercise. Plus, it keeps your creative juices from drying out!

They say you’re supposed to remember everything when you’re young, but we all have different memory capacities. A long list of errands can make a day feel shorter, requiring good time management skills and discipline. Believe it or not, jotting your tasks down in your journal and ranking them based on your priority greatly helps.

In a world where everything’s digital, tangible keepsakes are rare. Like how we post stories to review them in our Instagram archives later on, recording special moments and keeping little objects (e.g., receipts, stickers, candy wrappers, etc.) that remind us of that important day in our journal will make our future self happy.
