8 Questions Gen Zs Would Ask if They Were Hiring Managers

8 Questions Gen Zs Would Ask if They Were Hiring Managers

Aug 2, 2022   •   Kyzia Maramara

Generation Z hiring managers would ditch the classic “Tell me about yourself” and go for something next level, changing the hiring game for sure. Here are just a few questions a Gen Z hiring manager would ask potential employees.

“Tell me your astrology sign.”

ICYDK, some companies abroad now use an applicant’s astrology sign to hire them or discriminate against them. Gen Z isn’t surprised. You wouldn’t hire a Leo to work in retail and get assigned in the back rooms. They thrive with attention from a captivated audience. Hiring managers should leverage these charms to make them awesome public relations officers or actors. But Gen X and Millennial hiring managers wouldn’t know that, won’t they?

“What is your MBTI?”

Once they ask for your astrology and charted your sun, moon, and rising (whatever that means), expect the Gen Z hiring manager to follow it up with a query on your MBTI. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality test that categorizes you into one of 16 personalities — INFJ, ENFP, ISTP, etc. Your MBTI will give people insights into your preferences. Are you introverted or extroverted? Thinker or a feeler? Judger or a perceiver? The Gen Z hiring manager might just use this to assess whether you’re the person for the job.

“So what would you say is your toxic trait?”

Asking for a person’s strengths and weaknesses is so Gen X. Gen Z hiring managers will ask about an applicant’s toxic trait and the answer could be anywhere between watching a video of a dangerous stunt and thinking you could do it or being tardy for work and not caring at all. A person’s toxic trait is an added insight to their personality.

“What is your stand on [insert social issue]?”

Gen Z’s are woke. They’re natural activists, not afraid to stand up against the older generations if they know they’re in the right. A Gen Z hiring manager might just boldly ask you who you voted for president or if you’re pro-life and decide if you’re a perfect fit for the company based on just that.

“Show me your meme sense of humor”

The Gen Z hiring manager would like to know which memes have you curling on the floor in laughter. Are they dank memes? What’s your meme folder look like? Oh? Don’t have one? Hmm. Okay then, they might ask you to look at a few memes and blind react to them or make your own versions to see if you get the joke. Here’s a tip: Brush up on your memes!

“Fit check?”

In an office where every employee is Gen Z, the whole floor will be bursting with extravagance. Every person’s fit is  fire, never has a corporate office looked more alive! Cropped tops, chunky sneakers, the loosest of shirts, and even ghastly Yeezys abound. Match these with thicc eyeliners and dyed hair on space buns and you’re the coolest person ever.

So if your personal fashion aesthetic isn’t at par with the company, you might want to think about applying. But don’t worry too much. These kids literally wear anything so as long as you’re confident about your drip, you’re safe.

“What is your core aesthetic?”

Fit checks only cover the realm of fashion but core aesthetics is a lifestyle. Basically, anything can be a core aesthetic, most simply put the -core suffix to make it one. You might have encountered cottagecore (rural lifestyle), animecore, soft girl, dark and light academia, normcore, and the list goes on. If you have no idea what those words mean, we don’t have time to explain and that means you won’t get past the Gen Z hiring manager.

“Show me your go-to list of daily affirmations.”

Gen Zs prioritize mental health above corporate achievements and salary grades. After all, if you’re not happy with your work and your life, you can’t give your all. Be prepared for a list of affirmations, the stuff you tell yourself in the mirror in the morning to help you get through the day. “I am successful. I am an unstoppable force of nature. Anything I put my mind to, I can do.” They won’t judge you for that. In fact, they’ll even applaud you for hyping yourself up.
