Yay Wednesday! Barbie Has A Girlfriend and The Internet Is Celebrating

This week the internet is celebrating one monumental moment and that’s Barbie having a girlfriend! We all grew up knowing that Barbie’s partner was Ken, but based on pictures circulating online, the famous doll now has another partner. Here are some of the most heartwarming and funny reactions to Barbie’s girlfriend:
What is happening?
It all started when these photos of Barbie and another girl wearing “Love Wins” statement t-shirts started making their rounds on the internet.

In case you didn’t know, Barbie and Ken have been on and off for quite some time. (With so many careers between Barbie and Ken, can you blame them?) They last broke up on February 14, 2004 (yes, Valentine’s Day), and got back together exactly seven years later in 2011. To our best knowledge, the two have been together since then, but since this news broke out, we’re questioning everything we know about the world.

Love indeed wins. If Barbie really had a girlfriend, this milestone would not only be for the LGBTQ community, but also for this generation.

These photos, initially released in 2017, were part of Mattel’s Love Wins campaign in 2017. Apparently, Barbie’s “girlfriend” is the doll version of author, interior designer, and fashion blogger Aimee Song! The t-shirts the dolls are wearing are actually miniature versions of the shirts that Aimee was selling for charity.
So does that mean that Barbie isn’t queer?
When asked by The Guardian, Mattel didn’t comment on Barbie’s sexuality, but simply said that Barbie was an “inclusive brand that celebrates diversity, kindness, and acceptance.” Though they might’ve meant that Barbie is simply an ally, Barbie is a doll — she can be anything you want her to be, and that’s that.
