Countless Filipinos ~*love*~ everything Korean, from samgyeopsal and fashion, to K-pop and K-dramas, with the latter being probably the most popular Korean import. No, seriously. Many of us have watched at least one K-drama in our lives, whether it was recommended to us or simply out of curiosity. But not everyone appreciates the Korean wave. Take, for instance, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who recently took issue with the popularity of K-dramas in the Philippines.

Ban K-dramas and other foreign shows, Estrada says

In a Senate Committee hearing on Finance for the budget of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Senator Estrada expressed it crossed his mind to ban Korean telenovelas in the country to give more job opportunities for Filipino artists.

“Ang aking obserbasyon ‘pag patuloy tayo nagpapalabas ng Korean telenovela, ang hinahangaan ng ating mga kababayan ay itong mga Koreano at nawawalan ng trabaho at kita ‘yung ating mga artistang Pilipino,” he said. 

Estrada also expressed that Korean products are more promoted than locally-made goods.

Meanwhile, Senator Robin Padilla suggested raising the taxes on foreign shows and giving them as a subsidy for those working in the entertainment industry.

As soon as Estrada’s remarks made their way to news headlines, many expressed disappointment over his statements.  Netizens were quick to point out that instead of forcing Filipinos to support local art, the government can encourage the local film industry to produce more high-caliber series and films. 

Even Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda chimed in, saying that support should be earned. The only solution for lack of support is to create better art.

Many netizens pointed out that if lawmakers were truly serious about wanting to support local artists, they should put their money where their mouth is.

Senator Estrada responds

In a Facebook post, Estrada said his statements only came from frustration. 

“Kaugnay sa aking pahayag kahapon sa mga foreign-made shows, my statement stems from the frustration. That while we are only too eager and willing to celebrate South Korea’s entertainment industry, we have sadly allowed our own to deteriorate because of the lack of support from the moviegoing public,” the post reads.

He adds he has nothing against South Korea’s phenomenal success, but people shouldn’t forget and disregard the creations of Filipino creatives.

“South Korea’s phenomenal success is rooted in their love of country. It is high time that we follow their example and do the same for our own entertainment industry that is at best, barely surviving.”
