Everything We Know About the Upcoming Anime Prequel Film ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’

Nov 12, 2021   •   Meryl Medel

Anime fans, arise! One of the much-awaited anime films of this year is nearly here — Jujutsu Kaisen 0! Here’s what we know about this upcoming anime film:

What is Jujutsu Kaisen all about?

Jujutsu Kaisen is a shounen manga series by Gege Akatumi later adapted by MAPPA (the same studio behind Shingeki no Kyojin) into an anime series composed of 24 episodes.

The manga and anime series both follow the story of athletic genius high school student Yuji Itadori, who becomes entangled in the world of the supernatural after he ends up swallowing a cursed talisman — the finger of a notorious demon — and becoming cursed himself.

Then what about this film?

The film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will be a prequel to the anime series but is drawn from the manga. It focuses on a new character who we haven’t seen yet but was often mentioned in the anime.

Who’s the protagonist?

The character Yuta Okkotsu is the film’s protagonist. In the anime, he is currently a second-year high school student, but he has been training overseas, so he was never seen with the anime’s characters — so far.

In the film, years before the events of the anime take place, Yuta Okkotsu is being haunted by the spirit of his childhood friend Rika. Unfortunately, instead of the sweet girl he remembers in his memories, the spirit of Rika is now cursed, manifesting as a dangerous being who protects him against his will.

Which other characters will show up?

Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda are second-year high school students in the anime, and they are in the same grade level as Yuta Okkotsu. In the film, they will be first years alongside Yuta Okkotsu, after Satoru Goju brings him into Jujutsu High to train him as a sorcerer.

Spooky visuals

Right off the bat, the poster and visuals of the film will give you that ~spooky~ yet cool AF vibe that the anime has always carried. Aside from the posters, there have been two trailers released so far.

The first saw a sort of timelapse of Yuta Okkotsu and his childhood friend Rika — until Yuta seemed to be consumed by dark shadows.

Meanwhile, the second trailer features more of the storyline, showing how fan-favorite characters Goju, Maki, Toge, and Panda help Yuta manage his new life with a cursed spirit attached to him. The trailer also showed fights against the film’s main antagonist Suguru Geto, who also appeared in the anime.

How does all this tie into the anime?

As mentioned, Yuta has been heavily foreshadowed in the anime. If you’ve read the manga, you’ll know that there’s a reason for this — because he *will* actually appear one day in front of the anime’s characters. The film allows more storytelling for other characters without needing to sacrifice much break or flashback scenes in the anime.

When will it be released?

Produced by MAPPA, the same studio behind the anime, the film is set to be released on December 24, 2021.

Can’t wait?

If you’re too excited, you should get a headstart and watch (or rewatch?) the anime. Jujutsu Kaisen (Season 1) is available on Netflix.
