Now that we’ve officially ditched the chaos that is 2020, it’s time for a fresh start. The next 12 months are rife with possibilities but it’s not easy to hit the ground running if you don’t have a solid self-care plan, especially when last year has left you stressed and burnt out. Start this year strong — by committing to a self-care routine that ensures your mind, body, and soul are totally 101% ready to face the year ahead. Not sure where to start? Here are a few items to help you kickstart your 2021.
In the spirit of self-care, upgrading your habits starts with sitting down and listing all the things you want to change and all the habits you want to form. Give up your 3 AM sleeping schedule and wake up early, forgo some social media time and read more books. Don’t forget to write down why you want to form these habits so you get a clearer sight of your goal. And unlike your average New Years’ resolution which starts strong but fizzles out by mid-February at best (yep, we’ve been there), a solid self-care checklist requires commitment and sticking to a routine. So make it a point to stick to your habit upgrades.
Although we’ve spent the better part of 2020 stuck in our homes, in the hustle and bustle of work from home you might not notice that you’ve been skipping on some important Me Time. Pausing, even just for 10 minutes a day, and doing small activities such as meditating or practicing mindfulness can give you some well-deserved peace. Melt your accumulated stress via a warm (or cold) bath, an online streaming binge, or a simple walk outside.
Self-care includes putting yourself out there and experiencing what life has to offer (even in the restricted way we’re living right now). You don’t have to start a passion project or get a new hobby if you don’t want to but trying out new things is a great form of personal development. Dip your toes in new waters. Join an online film review club, obsess about building a miniature dollhouse, or even simple stuff like discovering new music.
Social media hogs up too much of your time. Ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through Facebook’s endless feed and then switching to Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube when you’re bored? It’s a time vortex! Not to mention a total stressful environment too. Put your phone away, or create schedules for turning it off, and you’ll realize how much free time you have on your hands to do other things.
Some reminders for the year ahead: you don’t need to put too much pressure on yourself and you can always take a break, you should be proud of what you’ve achieved so far, you will not compare yourself to “successful people” on the internet because we all walk at our own pace. Affirmations like those are important reminders whenever you feel doubtful and stressed. Self-care calls for you to be kinder to yourself this year so write your affirmations on a sticky note, keep them in your workspace, and recite them out loud whenever you need to.
Just as you bid the messy 2020 goodbye, it’s time to weed out toxic friendships and relationships. You don’t need that kind of negative energy for 2021. Growing older and tightening your circle of friends is not a bad thing at all — avoiding toxic people is self-care. Surround yourself with ones who would celebrate with you in your joys and highs and support you even in your lows.
Exercise — one of the important facets of self-care — not only whittles your body into that of a healthy human but sweating it out also boosts your mood. Move your body and release some endorphins! If you can’t hit the gym, do simple workouts at home. You can even download apps to help you get started on your #2021FitnessJourney. And if you pair your 5-10 minute daily workout with a healthy meal plan capped with a good night’s rest, the world better watch out for this go-getter.
Put your elementary lessons of Go, Grow, Glow to good use.
